Rebel Men Finish 17th, Women 22nd at NCAA Championships

11/17/2018 | Cross Country

MADISON, Wis. – Ole Miss cross country concluded a spectacular 2018 season in strong fashion, with the Rebel men recording their second-best team finish ever while the Rebel women set a new program high finish at the NCAA Championships on Saturday.

The Rebels fought near-freezing temperatures and about an inch of snow at the University of Wisconsin on Saturday morning, but both Ole Miss squads battled through to record the third-straight season of both teams finishing within the top-25 at the national meet. Only six other schools have been able to accomplish that same feat: Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, NC State, Oregon and Stanford.

The No. 26 Ole Miss women opened the day with a historic team effort in the championship 6K race, recording the highest team finish in program history in 22nd place in just their third trip ever to the national meet – beating out four teams ranked higher in the process. Today's effort tops the 2016 team's 23rd-place finish, which was the first trip to NCAAs in Rebel women's history.

Pacing the Rebels was sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques, who concluded a superb sophomore campaign with the second-highest individual finish in program history in 65th place overall at a 6K time of 20:48.1. Her finish today trails only Katie Breathitt's 62nd-place finish as an individual at the 2012 NCAA Championships – making Ozanne-Jaques the highest Rebel finisher as part of an NCAA qualifying team in Rebel women's history.

Ozanne-Jaques was also the top finisher at NCAAs as a freshman last season, finishing 109th overall – the only Rebel with returning NCAA experience on the women's championship roster this year. Her efforts today add onto a Second-Team All-SEC honor for her 12th-place finish at the conference meet – the third-best in school history – as well as a fifth-place finish at the NCAA South Regional for her second consecutive All-Region award, the highest regional finish in Ole Miss women's history.

The next three Rebel women all finished within four spots and were separated by just three tenths of a second. Freshman Ylvi Traxler finished in 142nd with a time of 21:24.7, followed by sophomore Maddie King (143rd, 21:24.7) and freshman Lisa Vogelgesang (145th, 21:25.0).

Also scoring for the Rebels was sophomore Victoria Simmons (156th, 21:29.6). Sophomore Anna Elkin (170th, 21:35.9) and junior Maddie McHugh (229th, 22:20.7) rounded out the Rebel lineup.

"The women really had a solid day, their best collective effort of the season," said associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy. "Clio did a great job leading the way and putting herself up there early on. Our pack of girls behind her ran exactly how we had planned, together, and moved up well the last half of the race. To have our best finish ever as a team was a great way to cap off the season."

No. 3 Colorado captured the women's title with a powerful 65-103 win over No. 1 New Mexico, thanks in part to individual NCAA Champion, Dani Jones.

The No. 14 Rebel men recorded their third consecutive top-20 team finish, taking 17th place overall following an All-American finish from sophomore Waleed Suliman. Today's showing is the second-highest team finish in Rebel men's history, trailing only the fourth-place podium finish by Ole Miss in 2016.

Suliman, already First-Team All-SEC and NCAA All-South Region this year, finished 36th overall at a career-best 10K time of 29:57.0 to become the fifth Rebel to earn All-American status in cross country at the fourth-highest finish in program history. This is the third straight year the Rebel men have scored at least one All-American finisher within the top-40.

Senior Mark Robertson concluded his Rebel career with his best NCAA finish ever in 91st at a career-best 30:33.2, while SEC Freshman of the Year Cade Bethmann also finished in the top-100 in 93rd at a PR time of 30:33.6. Freshman Mario Garcia Romo (154th, 31:04.5, PR) and junior Farah Abdulkarim (159th, 31:08.2, PR) also scored for the Rebels, while sophomore Ben Savino (183rd, 31:24.7, PR) and freshman Dalton Hengst (227th, 32:20.5, PR) also ran for the Rebels today.

"The men had a decent day," Vanhoy said. "We were a few individual performances away from a top-10 to top-12 team finish, but walking away with our second-best finish in school history is nothing to be ashamed of. Waleed ran his best cross country race ever to grab his first All-American honor and Cade and Mark did a great job of working together as planned to finish in the top-100."

No. 1 Northern Arizona took the men's team title for the third-straight season, while Wisconsin's Morgan McDonald edged out three others in a dead sprint over the last 100 meters in front of the home crowd for the NCAA individual title.

In total, only three Rebels in competition today had experience running at the national meet (Ozanne-Jaques, Robertson, Suliman), setting Ole Miss up for a still young but experienced team returning in 2019 to build upon the incredible success laid down this season – which included the first SEC Championship title in program history.

"We gained a lot of valuable experience today, laying a good foundation for the next few years as 13 of the 14 athletes who ran today will return next season," Vanhoy concluded.

Up next for the Rebels will be the beginning of the NCAA indoor track & field season, which will start for Ole Miss in January.
