Rebels Rumble Past Broncos in Exhibition 101-52

11/2/2018 | Men's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. – Playing in The Pavilion for the first time under Kermit Davis, the Ole Miss men's basketball team got off to a fast start and never looked back. The Rebels dominated on both ends of the floor to roll to a 101-52 victory over Fayetteville State in exhibition play Friday night.

For the first time ever in The Pavilion, serving as the home of the Rebels for the third full season, Ole Miss broke the century mark in points. The Rebels shot 58.6 percent (41 of 70) from the field and kept the Broncos in check at just a 26.7 percent (16 of 60) clip. Ole Miss had 29 assists on the 41 made field goals and also controlled the paint 56-18.

Senior guard Terence Davis stuffed the box score with 20 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and four assists without making a turnover. Coming off the bench, Bruce Stevens recorded a double-double with 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Other Rebels reaching double figures were junior center Dominik Olejniczak (15 points) and Devontae Shuler (11 points). Freshmen Blake Hinson and KJ Buffen appeared in the starting lineup, playing on Craddock Court for the first time. Hinson scored seven points and pulled down eight boards, while Buffen was a perfect 3 of 3 from the floor and dished out a team-high nine assists.

One of two freshmen in the starting lineup, Hinson made his presence known immediately with a three-pointer for the first bucket of the game. Back-to-back buckets by Olejniczak and a Terence Davis triple try gave the Rebels an early 10-0 lead. The Broncos got on the board with a pair of free throws, but Ole Miss continued the onslaught. An 11-0 run made it a 21-2 ballgame before Fayetteville State made its first basket of the game at the 12:23 mark of the opening half.

Behind 14 first half points from Stevens, the Rebels took a 51-26 lead into the locker room. Ole Miss shot 60.6 percent (20 of 33) in the first half, while limiting Fayetteville State to 33.3 perfect (9 of 27) from the floor. The Rebel dominated the paint by outscoring the Broncos 32-8 in the area over the first 20 minutes.

Just like the first half, Ole Miss went on a run coming out of the break. Scoring the first 14 points of the half, the Rebel lead increased to 39 and prompted Fayetteville State to call a timeout. Terence Davis and Breein Tyree combined for 16 points as Ole Miss made nine of its first 10 buckets, including 5 of 6 from beyond the arc, to push the Rebels ahead 74-31 with 14:18 left in the game.

Throughout the rest of the contest, the Rebels continued to grow their cushion. Stevens pulled down six more rebounds to secure his double-double, and Ole Miss cruised to the 49-point victory.

The Rebels will lift the lid on the 109th regular season of Ole Miss Basketball, as well as the first official game under Kermit Davis, by hosting Western Michigan at The Pavilion (Nov. 10). The Saturday afternoon tilt will tip off at 3 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
