Steven McRoberts Press Conference #11
11/6/2018 | Volleyball
Ole Miss head volleyball coach Steven McRoberts met with members of the media Monday as part of the fall sports weekly press conference... McRoberts discussed the Rebels weekend and what's next...
Opening Statement…
"One thing I said to a couple of people after this weekend is that it feels like the movie Groundhog Day- where we just keep doing the same things over and over. The team is performing well, but we are not performing well late in sets. We played No. 25 Tennessee at home on Friday. I thought we played one of our better matches of the whole season against them. We won the first set and lost the second set. We were up 23-21 in the third set and ended up they go on a four-point run and when. We were up 20-18 in the fourth set and they go on a five or six point run and we lose 25-23. Again, they are 25 in the nation, so we felt like we lost an opportunity there. In that match, [junior outside hitter] Emily Stroup just had an unbelievable match, having 31 kills which is a school record. She went over the 1,000 kill mark and broke the single-season kills record Sunday against No. 12 Kentucky. I felt like we were really competitive. That has been an issue with playing the Kentucky's and Florida's. Sometimes, they are up six or seven points before we know it, and there is nothing we can do. They are just that talented. I believe that every time we got to the media timeout at point 15 we were always in it, 15-13 or 15-14. We were always right there and pretty close until the 20s. Then Kentucky found a way to score a couple of points, and we found a way to make some errors on our end. It was just a bad combination to finish out each set. With that being said, we still have three weeks left. We have five matches with four of those being on the road. It will not be easy."
What's Next...
"We go to LSU on Wednesday, which is always tough to play there. Then we go to A&M this weekend. We only have two wins against A&M in our history, and both of those wins were last year. We feel confident going in to play them. We just have to get better late in the matches. I am really encouraged still by how this team comes in every day. I know that has to sound like Groundhog Day to you guys also. It is not coach speech because I feel honest in the past about when we have fallen short in some of those areas. This team has hung in there, and I am confident that they will continue to do that. We just keep putting ourselves in a position that hopefully we can finish some of these matches here late."
