Ole Miss Women Waiting to Receive At-Large Bid
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Ole Miss men's cross country left no doubt in their performance, dominating the men's 10K race to punch its fifth consecutive ticket to the national meet after winning the NCAA South Regional title on Friday morning at Florida State.
Just two weeks off a historic turn of events at the SEC Championships that saw the No. 17 Rebels bring home the first conference title in program history, Ole Miss put together arguably as impressive a performance today, tallying six All-Region runners and placing all five scorers within the top-15 at a scoring spread of 29.2 seconds – beating out second-place Florida State by 47 points for the win. This is the third South Region title for Ole Miss in the last five meets after winning titles in 2014 and 2016.
"I was very pleased," said associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy, who was just named SEC Men's Coach of the Year. "Our plan was to come in and be relaxed and controlled for the first 60 percent of the race, then let the race unfold and make some moves in the last three or four kilometers. Overall, it was what we were looking for."
After providing the spark to the Rebel men at the conference meet, junior Farah Abdulkarim led the charge today, finishing third overall at a 10K time of 31:18.6 for All-Region honors. Abdulkarim's finish is the highest since All-American Wesley Gallagher finished third in 2014 and the fourth top-three regional finish in program history after Gallagher's finish and two by All-American Barnabas Kirui in 2006 (first) and 2009 (second).
Sophomore Waleed Suliman took home All-Region distinction for the second straight year, finishing sixth at 31:22.0. It was also the second career All-Region nod for senior Mark Robertson, who finished eighth at 31:30.9.
Other Rebel finishers included freshman Mario Garcia Romo (13th, 31:36.7, All-Region), SEC Freshman of the Year Cade Bethmann (15th, 31:47.8, All-Region), sophomore Ben Savino (20th, 32:01.4, All-Region) and freshman Dalton Hengst (31st, 32:28.8).
Ole Miss will now look to make it three consecutive top-25 team finishes at the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, on Nov. 17. When asked what he thought could carry over to the national meet, Coach Vanhoy said getting the first 10K of the season in was crucial.
"I think that was the main goal for us at the regional," Vanhoy said. "Let's get in the race, get adjusted to running 10K for the first time all year and use this as a dress rehearsal for next week."
It was also a very good outing for the No. 23 Rebel women, but they will be playing the waiting game as they wait for an at-large bid to NCAAs after a third-place team finish today in what turned out to be a highly competitive women's 6K race.
Ole Miss (third, 87) beat out No. 30 Georgia Tech (fourth, 144) and No. 29 Georgia (fifth, 165), but fell behind two upstart programs in Florida State (60) and No. 21 Florida (64), who snared the automatic qualifier bids. A total of 13 at-large bids will be awarded following the conclusion of every NCAA Regional on Friday, and Ole Miss sits in good position to acquire one for a third consecutive trip to the national meet.
No matter how the at-large process shakes out, sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques will be representing Ole Miss in Madison next week after a fifth-place finish at a 6K time of 20:34.1 – the highest women's finish at the regional meet in program history (besting Katie Breathitt's sixth-place finish in 2012, the same year she qualified for NCAAs as an individual). This is the second All-Region honor for Ozanne-Jaques, who was also the top finisher for the Rebel women at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
Other Rebel finishers included freshman Lisa Vogelgesang (14th, 21:00.3, All-Region), sophomore Maddie King (20th, 21:09.9, All-Region), freshman Ylvi Traxler (25th, 21:12.8, All-Region), junior Maddie McHugh (26th, 21:12.9), sophomore Anna Elkin (37th, 21:37.7) and freshman Courtney Hopkins (55th, 21:47.0).
The at-large team bids will be announced officially by the NCAA at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday afternoon.
