OXFORD, Miss-The Ole Miss men's golf team will travel to Houston, Texas to compete in its first tournament of the new year at the All-American Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Houston (Feb. 16-18).
The three-day tournament will be held at the par 72, 7,096-yard Golf Club of Houston, site of the PGA Tour's Houston Open, located in Humble, Texas and features an 18-team field. The Rebels will tee off on Friday, February 16 at 8:30 a.m. for their first 18 holes and be paired with players from Houston and Auburn.
Ole Miss' lineup for the All-American Intercollegiate will include senior Kerry Sweeney, juniors Josh Seiple and Braden Thornberry, sophomore Chip Getz and freshman Cecil Wegener.
As a team, the Rebels posted top-10 finishes in every tournament competed in during the fall campaign. Their best result came at The Grove Intercollegiate where they finished runner-up (289-285-288-860) led by junior Braden Thornberry. Thornberry found medalist honors in half of the tournaments played last fall to become the leading golfer in school history with the most individual titles with nine.
Junior Josh Seiple was beside Thornberry each competition throughout the fall as the Castle Rock, Colorado, native worked a 73.58 stroke average with his best finish coming at a tie for 11th place at the first tournament of the 2017-18 campaign, the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.
Sweeney, Getz and Wegener each competed in three tournaments for the Rebels and will be seen back in the field this week. Sweeney and Getz will begin 2018 coming off of a strong fall finish. Both landed career bests at Ole Miss' last appearance, the Princeville Warrior Invitational in Hawaii.
Malloy's Minute
"We are excited to get back into competition this week. I know that our guys have worked hard this offseason to prepare for what is ahead of us this spring. This will be a great test for us to see where we are mentally heading into a very challenging stretch of tournaments ahead."
