Ole Miss Women Also Receiving Votes
NEW ORLEANS – Ole Miss men's cross country will open the 2018 season ranked No. 29 in the USTFCCCA Preseason Men's National Rankings, which were released by the coaches' association on Tuesday afternoon.
This marks the fourth straight season that the Rebel men have appeared in the preseason poll. Ole Miss has been ranked in 18 straight polls, including the entirety of the last two seasons. The Rebel men haven't been unranked since Week 6 of the 2015 season, and they have been represented in 24 of the last 29 polls dating back to the 2014 season. In addition, Ole Miss has at least been receiving votes in the national poll in 27 of the last 29 editions.
Ole Miss was recently picked to finish third in the SEC Preseason Coaches Poll on Monday, and they also opened the season ranked No. 3 in the South Region rankings released by the USTFCCCA on Monday.
The Rebel men have lost several key pieces from the last few seasons – including All-American Sean Tobin – but return a young and talented roster, led by sophomores and 2017 All-South Region performers Parker Scott and Waleed Suliman. Ole Miss took third at the conference meet before earning an auto-bid to the national meet with a second-place finish at the NCAA South Regional. From there, the Rebel men finished 18th in the team standings at the NCAA Championships, the second consecutive top-20 team finish after a program-high podium finish in fourth during the 2016 season.
Ole Miss received votes in the women's poll as well, marking the 17th consecutive occasion dating back to the 2016 season. The Rebel women were also picked to finish third in the conference preseason poll yesterday, and they opened the season ranked No. 6 in the South Region.
The Rebel women lost a handful of significant contributors themselves in All-Region honorees Emily Bean, Shelby Brown and Hannah Christen, but return a strong, young roster of their own. Senior and 2017 All-Region runner Anna Braswell leads the way, as does sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques – who, as a freshman, earned All-Region and SEC All-Freshman honors, while also finishing as the top Rebel at the national meet last year en route to a 25th-place finish for Ole Miss.
Ole Miss will kick off the 2018 season this Saturday (Sept. 1) at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic, which will be held at Christian Brothers University at 9:20 p.m. CT.
