Rebels Fall in Five to Memphis Tuesday

9/11/2018 | Volleyball

Mulkey, Stroup, Fate all turn in career-highs

OXFORD, Miss. — Despite picking up their 14thstraight set to begin the evening, Ole Miss volleyball dropped its second contest of the season, falling in five (25-16, 21-25, 28-30, 25-20, 10-15) to border rival Memphis Tuesday at Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

Although the outcome was not in their favor, several Rebels' posted career-best performances in the contest. Junior Emily Stroup and sophomore Leah Mulkey both reached new personal records in kills at 27 and 17, respectively, while junior Jordan Fate dished out a career-high 46 assists, also tying her career-high with 13 digs. Classmate Nicole Purcell also collected a milestone, finishing with a season-best 16 digs.

Stroup registered her conference-leading sixth double-double, adding 12 digs, while Mulkey also turned in a career-best with five total blocks.

After trading points in the early stages of the opening stanza, the Rebels took advantage of a 6-0 rally to take a hefty 18-10 lead. The Tigers attempted to claw back into contention, but Ole Miss secured the set taking four of the last five points, courtesy of two kills from junior Nayo Warnell, to win 25-16.

The two squads battled through frame two, enduring 15 tied scores before Memphis pulled away late, using a 4-0 run to even the match with a 25-21 victory.

The cat-and-mouse concept continued into Set 3, especially late, when the Rebels went through four set points and the Tigers two before Memphis took the match lead, grinding out a 30-28 win.

The Rebels fired back to take the fourth frame, capitalizing on a pair of Memphis miscues and two kills each from Mulkey and Stroup to take six of the final seven and the set 25-20.

After the Tigers cruised to an early 7-1 lead in the finale, a challenge overturned in Ole Miss favor swung the momentum to the Rebels, who used back-to-back kills from Stroup, then another pair of Memphis errors and another two kills from Stroup to come within one before ultimately falling 15-10 and dropping the match.

Ole Miss returns to the court Friday, facing Austin Peay and Rice in the Rice Invitational in Houston.
