Junior Nayo Warnell named All-Tournament
HOUSTON, Texas — Ole Miss volleyball moved back into the win column Saturday, picking up a 3-0 victory over McNeese State (25-15, 25-23, 25-17) in the Rebels' final contest of the Rice Adidas Invitational II, held in the Tutor Fieldhouse.
Junior Nayo Warnell was honored with All-Tournament accolades, finishing the weekend with 27 kills on a .469 hitting percentage, tallying nine blocks across 11 sets. She registered six kills and three blocks against McNeese.
The duo of sophomore Leah Mulkey and junior Emily Stroup each posted 14 kills, helping guide the Rebels to a team hitting efficiency of .346. The squad combined for just eight attack errors. Senior libero Caroline Adams added 14 digs and junior Jordan Fate dished out 37 assists.
The Rebels used three separate 4-0 runs to build a heavy cushion in the opening stanza, paced by Mulkey's seven slams. McNeese narrowed the gap to just two points at 15-13 before Ole Miss cruised through the rest of the set, where Mulkey ignited for five kills, including back-to-back for the final two points, giving the Rebels a 25-15 win.
The Cowgirls replied with a 3-0 run of their own in the second set to take a two-point lead early at 8-6. After trading points and enduring 10 tied scores, the Rebels used a kill from freshman Aubrey Sultemeier, an ace from Stroup, and a McNeese attack error to regain control and take their biggest lead of the frame at 17-14.
The Cowgirls battled back, using four straight points to tie the score once again at 19 all and then again at 20-20. The Rebels used yet another kill by Mulkey and a McNeese miscue to lead 22-20, and then capitalized on a skillful dig from Nayo Warnell to feed Sultemeier and put Ole Miss at set point before emerging from a total of 12 tied scores with the victory at 25-23.
Ole Miss powered through the finale, securing seven of the final eight points to pick up the set 25-17 and take the match 3-0, their fourth sweep of the season.
