Rebels Hit High, Drop Home Opener to Georgia 3-0
9/28/2018 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. — Despite three Rebels with above .400 hitting percentages, Ole Miss volleyball dropped its SEC home opener Friday, falling in straight sets (24-26, 18-25, 26-28) to Georgia at Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
Ole Miss slips to 10-6 (0-2), while the Bulldogs improve to 11-3 (2-1).
The junior duo of Emily Stroup and Nayo Warnell turned in clips of .421 and .444, respectively, as Stroup registered 19 kills. Senior Caitlin Wernentin hit at .417, adding six slams. Warnell led the defense at the net, recording four blocks.
The two squads battled for the opening stanza, going through 14 ties and eight lead changes. With Georgia holding set point 24-23, the Rebels capitalized on a kill by Stroup to reach the equalizer, but ultimately dropped the set 26-24. Despite falling in the frame, the Rebels hit at a stellar .389 efficiency.
Ole Miss carried the lead midway through the second set, but after a 5-0 run from the Bulldogs, who went on to take nine of the next 11 total points, the Rebels fell behind 21-15 and used their last timeout to try and find momentum. Despite hitting .417 in the frame, Ole Miss fell 25-18 and dropped to 0-2 in the match.
Much like the second set, the Rebels controlled for most of the match. Ole Miss led late in the set at 18-17, but back-to-back kills from the Bulldogs' Rachel Ritchie and a Rebel miscue handed Georgia the lead back at 20-18. The Rebels responded with their own 3-0 rally to even the set at 21-21. A couple late kills from Wernentin brought the Rebels to three different set points, but the Bulldogs battled through to take the frame 28-26 and the match 3-0.
UP NEXT
Ole Miss will remain at home, welcoming Auburn, who is also seeking their first league win. After that the Rebels will split the weekend, traveling to Arkansas for a Friday tilt before returning home to welcome LSU Sunday, Oct. 7. The match will be a red out, and the first 200 fans will receive a red t-shirt.
