Football Suffers Road Loss to No. 5 LSU

9/29/2018 | Football

BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss could not pull off the upset on the road at Tiger Stadium Saturday night, falling 45-16 to No. 5 LSU.

The Rebels (3-2, 0-2 SEC) struck first on the night in front of 100,224 at Death Valley, following two big runs by Scottie Phillips and a key third-down reception by Braylon Sanders on their second drive of the game. Luke Logan connected on his first of three field goals on the night, hitting from 30 yards out to put the Rebels ahead 3-0.

LSU (5-0, 2-0 SEC) answered quickly as Joe Burrow (18-for-25, 292 Yds, 3 TD) found Ja'Marr Chase on a 21-yard touchdown pass to put the Tigers head 7-3. After a three-and-out by Ole Miss on the ensuing drive, the Tigers marched down field once again, using a 4-yard rush by Nick Brossette (72 Yds, 20 ATT, 1 TD) to extend the lead to 14-3.

The second member of LSU's one-two punch in the backfield, Clyde Edwards-Helaire (67 Yds, 11 ATT, 1 TD) took his turn on the next Tiger drive. Ole Miss was penalized three times on the LSU possession, which ended in a 3-yard rushing score by Edwards-Helaire, making it 21-3 in favor of the home team. The Rebels went three-and-out once again on their next drive, leading to the fourth-consecutive LSU score. This time, receiver Justin Jefferson (99 Yds, 2 TDs) broke free down the left side for a 65-yard touchdown connection with Burrow to make it a 28-3 contest.

The Rebel defense came up big on the following possession. LSU worked its way into the red zone, where Mohamed Sanogo (12 Tk) laid a massive hit on Burrow, jarring the ball loose at the 12-yard line. Safety C.J. Miller (7 Tk) pounced on the loose ball to give the Rebel offense one chance before the half.

Ole Miss took advantage of the turnover. Jordan Ta'amu found D.K. Metcalf on a 22-yard gain to start the drive. Later, with Ole Miss facing a 4th-and-4 at its own 37, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Tiger defensive back Greedy Williams gave the Rebels a first down. Ta'amu connected with A.J. Brown, Dawson Knox and DaMarkus Lodge on consecutive plays, and he later hit Brown for a huge 35-yard gain inside the LSU 5-yard line to set up a 17-yard field goal by Logan, cutting the deficit to 28-6 at halftime.

The Rebel defense came up with a quick three-and-out to open the second half, but the special teams unit was flagged for roughing the kicker to keep the drive alive. Fortunately, the Rebel defense came up with another huge turnover. Qaadir Sheppard (6 Tk, 2 TFL) laid a jarring hit on Brossette in the backfield to knock the ball loose at the 13, and Zedrick Woods recovered for the turnover.

Ole Miss used that turnover to flip field position, and one drive later, the Rebels methodically marched 59 yards downfield for their first touchdown of the night. Phillips had two third-down conversions on the drive and ultimately punched in a 1-yard score, giving him touchdowns in four-of-five games this season, cutting the Tiger lead to 15.

LSU responded, though, going 67 yards in five plays, culminating with the second touchdown connection between Burrow and Jefferson to stretch the lead to 35-13. Ole Miss answered back with a 51-yard drive that ended in a career-long 40-yard field goal by Logan. On the following drive, LSU got those three points back after a Willie Hibbler sack on third down forced the field goal try in the red zone.

LSU's Burrow added one final touchdown, breaking free on a 35-yard score with 2:56 to go, giving the Tigers a 45-16 victory.

Ta'amu finished 19-of-38 with 178 yards through the air, adding 11 yards on the ground. Phillips led the way for the Ole Miss rushing attack with 96 yards and a touchdown. Brown paced the Rebel receiving corps with nine catches for 72 yards. Metcalf and Lodge added two receptions apiece for 37 and 23 yards, respectively.

Ole Miss returns to action next Saturday at 3 p.m. CT at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, where the Rebels will host ULM for homecoming weekend.
