ORLANDO, Fla. -- Ole Miss Men's Tennis opened its 2019 dual match season at the hands of a tough opponent, suffering a sweep to No. 8 Texas in the opening match of the USTA Collegiate Series, held at the National Campus, on site in Orlando.
The veteran duo of junior Tim Sandkaulen and Fabian Fallert suffered a quick defeat in the first doubles position, falling 1-6 to ranked foes Christian Sigsgaard and Harrison Scott.
Competition started with a promising look on the adjacent court, as sophomore Cotter Wilson and senior Filip Kraljevic responded to a quick early deficit to even things at 2-2. The Rebels unfortunately couldn't maintain that momentum, after falling behind 40-15 in the fifth frame. The duo picked up back-to-back points before the Longhorns turned on cruise control, taking the lead three games to two and coasting to a 6-2 victory to hand Texas the doubles point.
In the first singles position, Sandkaulen broke out to an early 2-0 lead over the Longhorns' top-ranked player in Sigsgaard (#4, ITA), who quickly evened things at two games apiece. Sandkaulen regained control, if but only briefly before dropping both sets 6-4.
Kraljevic provided excitement at second singles but in a reverse fashion. After trailing two games, the veteran rallied back to take three straight frames and the lead. Unable to keep the momentum, he dropped the first set to Yuya Ito, ranked 18thin the latest ITA Individual Player Rankings. Ito continued to control the contest, handing the Longhorns their third point after a 6-3 second set.
A series of tie breakers took place across the next three courts, with rookie Simon Junk rallying back to nearly down Texas senior Colin Markes in a 7-6 (4) decision in the opening set in No. 5 singles. Classmate Jan Soren Hain delivered an identical breaker in the second set for fourth singles after dropping the opener 6-3, and senior Fabian Fallert lost via a 7-6 (6) decision in his second set.
