Rebel Men’s Distance Medley Relay Ran the NCAA’s No. 2 Time
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The next generation of the Rebel men's distance medley relay ran a solid first race of the season as Ole Miss track & field opened competition at the Indiana Relays on Friday at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Ole Miss, winner of four of the previous five SEC men's DMR titles, as well as the 2017 NCAA title, took second overall today at the NCAA's second-fastest time this year at 9:38.09 – the ninth-fastest time in school history. The quartet consisted of sophomore Everett Smulders on the 1200 leg (2:56), junior transfer James Burnett on the 400 leg (48.1), sophomore Waleed Suliman on the 800 leg (1:50) and senior Derek Gutierrez on the 1600 leg to close (4:03).
Suliman was a member of a Second-Team All-American and SEC runner-up DMR squad as a freshman in 2018, while Gutierrez was part of the third-place NCAA relay in 2016 that earned First-Team All-American honors at the third-fastest time ever at Ole Miss (9:31.82).
Ole Miss also claimed an event title from freshman Jayda Eckford in the women's 200-meter dash, running a near half-second PR at 24.10 -- the eighth-fastest time ever at Ole Miss. Fellow freshman Kelly Rowe won her heat as well in fourth overall at a PR time of 24.38, the 15th-best in school history.
Sophomore thrower Shey Taiwo had another successful day in the weight throw, finishing as the top collegian for the second straight week in second place at 20.91m (68-07.25). Olympian DeAnna Price won by tying the facility record at 24.57m (80-07.50) – the 11th-best throw in world history.
The Rebel men also put two into the weight throw final, with freshman Joseph Benedetto finishing fifth at 18.17m (59-07.50) and sophomore Chris Long recording a half-foot PR at 17.98m (59-00.00) for sixth place.
Other notable field finishes included junior Kaira Simmons' season-best 5.87m (19-03.25) in the long jump for fourth place, and an overall career best 5.05m (16-06.75) in the men's pole vault by junior Cole Colozzo, who finished seventh overall and moved into a tie for seventh on the all-time Ole Miss list.
Both the Rebel men's and women's sprinters got the meet off to a hot start, qualifying several to tomorrow's finals in both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles.
Three Rebel men ended up punching their tickets, with sophomore Elijah Dryer leading the way with the second-fastest prelim time at 6.86. Joining Dryer are junior Andrew Raspo (sixth, 6.89) and freshman Jaqaun Webb (seventh, 6.93).
