The ITA Kick-Off Weekend takes place at 24 different Division I tennis facilities across the country, with 60 teams competing for both men's and women's squads.
Each side hosts 15 regionals, with four teams competing in each regional. The winners of this single-elimination event advance to the Division I National Team Indoor Championships, held in February, held in Seattle for the women and Chicago for the men.
LAST TIME ON THE COURT
Ole Miss battled Washington and Hawaii last weekend at the Weinman Foundation Invitational in Honolulu. Junior Cameron Kriscunas picked up a pair of singles wins while sophomore Sabina Machalova and Tea Jandric validated their No. 31 ITA ranking with a pair of doubles victories. Machalova found further success with another singles win as well.
SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS
Purdue is riding a two-match win streak to open the season, dispatching DePaul 5-2 and Butler 4-0 last weekend at home. The No. 4 seed in this weekend's tournament features one current ITA ranked player in No. 19 Silvia Ambrosio. Ole Miss won the last two meetings in the series with identical 5-2 decisions (2018 at Purdue, 2016 in Oxford). The Boilermakers fell in the first round of the 2018 Big Ten tournament, 1-4, to Ohio State.
SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
The No. 9 Wolverines enter the match 0-0 as the No. 2 seed, but had four athletes go unblemished at last weekend's Michigan Invitational. All four are represented in the latest rankings (No. 3 Kate Fahey, No. 27 Brienne Minor, No. 36 Chiara Lommer, and No. 65 Giulia Pairone). Additionally, Fahey and Minor are No.15 for doubles. Ole Miss last squared up against the Wolverines at the same Michigan Invitational in 2014, but fell in singles (2-5) and doubles (1-2). Michigan is seeking its 10th consecutive ITA National Team Indoor Championships appearance. Last year, the Maize and Blue were dropped by Stanford in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
SCOUTING THE ORANGE
Syracuse, the No. 3 seed, sit No. 24 nationally. The Orange dominated Brown (7-0) and Columbia (5-2) at home a week ago. Two players are ranked in the top 100, No. 43 Gabriela Knutson and No. 92 Sofya Golubovskaya. The doubles pair of Golubovskaya and Sofya Treshcheva are ranked No. 24. Ole Miss was defeated 1-0 in the teams' only prior meeting back in 1987. Syracuse is no stranger to Mississippi though, losing to Wichita State 1-4 in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament in Oxford.
