Ole Miss will play again Sunday, slated for an 11 a.m. start
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss Women's Tennis dropped their 2019 dual match opener Saturday morning, falling in a closely contested 4-3 battle to Purdue at the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center, located along Manning Way, in the opening match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The Rebels fall to 0-1 on the young season, and will now play in the consolation match Sunday at 11 a.m., with opponent still to be determined between No. 9 Michigan and No. 24 Syracuse.
Although Ole Miss broke through with the first point of the contest via the doubles point, the Boilermakers surged, picking up back-to-back singles points to spoil the Rebels from building an insurmountable lead.
After being down two games, the duo of juniors Tereza Janatova and Anna Vrbenska evened things at 3-3, with fellow veteran duo of Alexa Bortles and Allie Sanford carrying the same mentality at third doubles.
Bortles and Sanford rode through the momentum of being down by a pair of games to take control of the set at 5-4, thanks to some strong swinging on the backline from Bortles. The duo secured the advantage for the Rebels with a 6-4 victory.
Back at second doubles, Vrbenska and Janatova fell behind once more, repeating the same rallying process to force a tiebreaker and eventually clinch the doubles point for the Rebs after a commanding 7-2 mark.
Moving to singles action, things looked in favor of the Rebels early, as Bortles hopped in the driver's seat early, coasting to a 6-1 opening set for the upper hand. It was a tale of two sets, as she couldn't find the same groove in the second, falling behind before forcing a tiebreak before reclaiming the lead and victory at 7-5.
The left three courts were all brought to tiebreakers, including going to extra points between the ranked matchup of sophomore Sabina Machalova (No. 68), and Purdue's Silvia Ambrosio (#19) in first singles.
After battling through the tiebreaker at fifth singles, where she also was forced into extra points for the decider, Janatova cruised in the second set, picking up the first four straight games en route to a 6-3 second set and evening the match score at 3-3.
Sanford also battled in a tiebreaker, controlling for most of the second set before falling 7-6 (7-1).
