Rebels to Face No. 17 UT Martin for Neutral-Site Match in Murray

OXFORD, Miss. – The 2019-20 season officially gets underway for No. 5 Ole Miss Rifle as the team travels to Murray, Kentucky for a neutral-site match with No. 17 University of Tennessee at Martin on Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. CT.

Live stats can be accessed via the link provided as well as in-match updates via the @OleMissRifle Twitter account.

COUNTERS…
Smallbore: Abby Buesseler, Sophia Cuozzo, Alana Kelly, Erin Walsh, Jillian Zakrzeski
Air Rifle: Abby Buesseler, Kristen Derting, Alana Kelly, Claire O'Neel, Jillian Zakrzeski

LOADED WITH RETURNING TALENT
The Rebels return nine letterwinners, including Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Honorable Mention honorees in senior Hayley Carroll and sophomore Jillian Zakrzeski, the team's top aggregate scorer from a year ago (1165). The squad also returns four of the team's top five aggregate performers from last year's squad that spent several weeks in the Top 8 before finishing the season No. 10. Junior Abby Buesseler should also be a key contributor this season after leading the team in smallbore with a 577 average.

As a team, the Rebels posted four of the top 10 scores in program history last season as well as nine of the top 20. Ole Miss posted a three-score NCAA qualifying average of 4672 with marks of 4685, 4665 and 4665. The Rebels incredible 4685-point total fired on January 13 against Akron was just two points shy of the program record set in 2018.

NEW FACES
Ole Miss welcomes freshmen Kristen Derting and Claire O'Neel to the squad. Both were named 2019 Eley High School All-Americans, Derting for smallbore and O'Neel for air rifle. The pair should add instant depth to a talented roster. Graduates Harley Gardner and Randi Loudin are the program's two losses. Loudin talled the second-best smallbore average in 2018-19 at 576 points per match.

SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
No. 17 UT Martin has competed in two matches thus far this season, posting scores of 4591 and 4593, respectively. The Skyhawks are led by senior Kaitlin Korinek, junior Jennifer Plocinik and sophomore Rachel Sprague. Korinek paces the team in air rifle (591.5) and aggregate average (1166) this season. Plocinik has been the team's best in air rifle (583) and second-best overall (1153). Sprague (576-581-1152), who was the 2018-19 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, should also contribute to the Skyhawk score.

RECORD BREAKERS
The Ole Miss Rifle team is already setting records ahead of their first match, entering as the No. 5 program in the first College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Top 20 poll of the season. It is the highest the Rebels have ever climbed in national rankings.

Ole Miss enters the Top 5 after being idle the first week of the 2019-20 NCAA rifle season and based off its top-three score average of 4672 from 2018-19. The top three teams also did not compete last weekend.

Rebel Rifle previously reached as high as No. 6 in the polls following Ole Miss' sixth-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Rifle Championships and were No. 7 last season for one week after firing a 4685 on January 13 against Akron in Columbus, Ohio.

MARSHA'S MINUTE
On facing UT Martin in Murray
"We are happy to be competing with the University of Tennessee at Martin. It's been three years since they've been on our schedule and I'm happy it worked out this year. We are also grateful to Murray State for hosting the match. They have a nice facility and our team always enjoys travelling to Murray."

On excitement leading into season opener
"I think the team is really looking forward to the season opener. Everyone loves competing – that is why they are here. Our last college match was in February. While most of the girls did compete throughout the summer, and five just returned from Olympic Trials, college matches just have a different feel and I think the returners are ready to get back to it and the freshmen are excited to be part."
