Junior Abby Buesseler Also Ties Third Highest Smallbore Total in Program History

MURRAY, Ky. – A bevy of personal bests in smallbore propelled the No. 5 Ole Miss rifle team past No. 17 University of Tennessee at Martin, 4668-4591 inside the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range on Sunday. The Rebels posted their fifth best score in school history, while junior Abby Buesseler tied the third highest smallbore score in program history with a 586.

Smallbore comes up big
The Rebels took a commanding lead early, outshooting the Skyhawks 2317-2272 in the three-event discipline. Buesseler fired an incredible 586 (194-200-192) to lead the field. She improved on her previous best total by three points after closing with 10 consecutive 10s to end the standing portion. Only All-Americans Ali Weisz (589; 2015) and Shannon Wilson (587; 2006) have scored more in one match for Ole Miss.

Senior Alana Kelly surpassed her previous smallbore mark by four points to post a 583 (193-199-191). She tied her best prone score like Buesseler, and was one away in both kneeling and standing. Rounding out the counters were sophomores Jillian Zakrzeski (575) and Erin Walsh (573).

Non-counters who performed well included junior Kamilla Kisch (578) and freshmen Claire O'Neel (578) and Kristen Derting (575). Kisch (194-196-188) tied her personal best in kneeling and was one point from tying her standing mark. O'Neel (192-198-188) and Derting (188-199-188) were solid in their first collegiate match.

Rebel air rifle bests Skyhawks
Ole Miss also dominated in air rifle outfiring UT Martin 2351-2319. O'Neel, a rookie from Frederick, Maryland, posted the highest score of the match with a 591. She tied Kelly (586) for second in aggregate with 1169 points each. Buesseler finished comfortably ahead as the top overall shooter (588) with 1174 total points.

Kisch and Zakrzeski also finished the event with 586 points. Kisch finished tied for fifth (1164) with UT Martin's Rachel Sprague. Zakrzeski rounded out the Rebel total. The top Skyhawk of the day was Kaitlin Korinek (577-589-1166), who ended in fourth place.

Marsha's Minute
On team and individual bests
"This was a good match for us today. Our combined score was the fifth highest in school history. I was delighted to see Abby, Alana and Claire turn in personal bests in smallbore. It was also a personal best for Alana in the combined aggregate. In addition, Abby and Kamilla tied their PRs in prone and kneeling, respectively. Kamilla's 578 was just one off her personal best in smallbore.

On how air rifle performed
"Our air was below what I'd like to see, but it is early in the season and I am optimistic we will put together better scores as the season progresses."

On the first match and a look ahead
This match was a great chance to test what we've been working on in practice. We are grateful to Murray State for hosting us and I know this experience will be valuable to us as we begin our conference schedule in two weeks.
