Rebels Tie Sixth Highest Air Rifle Score in Win on Saturday

OXFORD, Miss. – A terrific air rifle performance was enough to power the No. 7 Ole Miss rifle team past No. 8 Army West Point, 4664-4645 inside the Ole Miss Rifle Range on Saturday.

The Rebels opened their Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) schedule by tying their sixth-highest total in the event with 2362 points.

Air rifle overpowers Army
Ole Miss (2-0, 1-0 GARC) placed four shooters in the top five to tally a 2362-2355 edge in the discipline. Kaitlyn Kutz of Army (0-1, 0-1 GARC) posted an outstanding 597, but a quartet of Rebels finished two through five to make up the difference. Junior Abby Buesseler and freshman Claire O'Neel posted identical 592s, while senior Alana Kelly and sophomore Erin Walsh ended the match with 589 points each. Junior Kamilla Kisch also tallied a 589 in Relay Two as a non-counter.

O'Neel started with 20 consecutive 10s to improve on her score from Oct. 13 by a point, and Kelly equaled her all-time best mark. The 2362 sits only three points off the 2012 program record of 2365.

Kelly leads smallbore
Kelly continued her day of improvements in smallbore to help the Rebels best the Black Knights, 2302-2290. The senior from Acworth, Georgia tied with Army's Clayton Hanson with 580 points. Kelly (195-199-186) set a personal best in kneeling and prone as well tying her top aggregate total (1169).

Buesseler (195-194-187) finished third with 576 points over the three-positions and second overall with an 1168. A trio of Rebels ended the match with 573s, including sophomores Jillian Zakrzeski, Erin Walsh and O'Neel. Zakrzeski and Walsh had slightly more center shots to officially complete the team total.

On individual performances
"Freshmen Claire O'Neel and Kristen Derting keep improving, which is exciting. I'm also happy to see senior Alana Kelly putting up solid scores early on and tying her personal best today."

On competing against Army and improving
"We enjoyed competing against Army today and we were happy to win our GARC opener. There is a lot of parity in our conference with seven teams, including Army, currently in the Top 10. Overall, I feel we were solid today and I saw several nice pieces. We will focus on putting in our best effort everyday."

On hosting No. 1 West Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 2
"Next Saturday we are home against West Virginia and look forward to another opportunity to compete against a top team."
