Rebel Junior Fired an 1183 Total and Tied Air Rifle Mark with a 597
OXFORD, Miss. – No record was safe on Saturday as the No. 8 Ole Miss rifle team and junior Abby Buesseler set numerous program marks, while hosting No. 1 West Virginia at the Ole Miss Rifle Range.
The Mountaineers (3-0, 2-0 GARC) won the match, 4704-4674, but the Rebels (2-1, 1-1 GARC) shot a program record 2372 in smallbore to obtain the third-highest total in school history. Buesseler broke the aggregate school record by three full points with an 1183, and tied the air rifle mark of 597.
Three personal bests in air rifle helped the Rebels win the event, 2372-2361. Buesseler used 52 center shots to tie the program record. She used a streak of 18 straight and closed with 10 centers shots in a row to go along with 57 total tens. The junior from Stacy, Minnesota also tied her personal best of 586 in smallbore to set the new aggregate total with 1183 points. The 597 air rifle and 1180 aggregate records were previously set by Ali Weisz back in 2016.
Freshman Claire O'Neel continued to impress early in her Rebel career, posting a 593. She was followed by senior Alana Kelly with a 592, who improved on her top mark by three points. Sophomore Erin Walsh completed the Ole Miss total with a 590, while junior Sophia Cuozzo tied her top mark of 588 as a non-counter.
West Virginia opened the match by winning smallbore with five of the top six shooters, 2342-2302. Buesseler finished second in the event (196-199-191) and overall to WVU's Akihito Shimizu (590-595-1185). Junior Kamilla Kisch (577) and freshmen Kristen Derting (576) had strong matches as non-counters. Kisch (188-197-192) tied her best score in prone and improved her total in standing. O'Neel (575), Kelly (572), and Walsh (569) rounded out the Ole Miss score.
Rapid Fire with Abby Buesseler
On her mindset of improvement:
"We've been practicing a lot and working with assistant coach JP Lucas and figuring out the little mental skills I've been needing to build up. Coming into this match I just tried to keep it really simple and then thought about the things that I wanted to accomplish and what it took to get to that point. Then I just put it together and try to be really patient with it and not over think it. It feels like I've been able to put all my skills together and have been successful (this season)."
On whether setting records was on her mind:
"Honestly, no. I hadn't really thought about it that much. It's super exciting that it did happen. I knew that if I could put it all together then I'm capable of doing good things, but I hadn't been thinking about it that much."
On how she felt when the final scores were posted:
"I felt just like a little bit of relief because it was a very stressful match and relief that it was over. I'm just really proud of myself for putting things together and working hard throughout the match. It wasn't easy to go up there and shoot that, and I knew the whole time that I was doing pretty well. I was just maintaining that throughout the match and feel really proud of myself for how I performed today."

On setting the air rifle program record:
"I am excited the team set the school record in air rifle today. JP Lucas and I have been seeing many excellent scores in practice and I'm so glad we were able to put it together in a match. West Virginia is a great team and I'm proud we were able to finish ahead of them in the air rifle event. The team has been working very hard and it is rewarding to see this progress."
On individual personal bests:
"Abby's 597-52x personal best in air is quite remarkable. She really performed well today. In addition to her record setting air rifle score, her 586 in smallbore tied her personal best and combined with her air rifle score established a new school record in the combined aggregate. Alana Kelly's 592 in air rifle was three points above of her previous personal best. Sophia Cuozzo's also tied her personal best in air rifle. Continual improvement is our goal and new personal bests are a great indicator we are heading in the right direction."
