No. 5 Rifle Travels to the Bluegrass State for a Pair of Matches

Rebels Face No. 3 Kentucky on Friday, No. 6 Akron on Saturday
OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 5 Ole Miss rifle team will look to continue its early season momentum as the Rebels travel to the Bluegrass State to face No. 3 Kentucky on Friday and No. 6 Akron on Saturday in Lexington.
Friday's match against the Wildcats is slated for an 8 a.m. CT start, while Ole Miss duals with the Zips on Saturday, beginning at 7 a.m.

LAST MATCH HIGHLIGHTS VS. WEST VIRGINIA
No record was safe as the then-No. 8 Ole Miss rifle team and Buesseler set numerous program marks, while hosting then-No. 1 West Virginia at the Ole Miss Rifle Range on Nov. 2.
The Mountaineers (3-0, 2-0 GARC) won the match, 4704-4674, but the Rebels (2-1, 1-1 GARC) shot a program record 2372 in smallbore to obtain the third-highest total in school history. Buesseler broke the aggregate school record by three full points with an 1183, and tied the air rifle mark of 597.
Three personal bests in air rifle helped the Rebels win the event, 2372-2361. Buesseler used 52 center shots to tie the program record. The junior from Stacy, Minnesota also tied her personal best of 586 in smallbore to set the new aggregate total with 1183 points. The 597 air rifle and 1180 aggregate records were previously set by Ali Weisz back in 2016.
O'Neel continued to impress early in her Rebel career, posting a 593. She was followed by senior Alana Kelly with a 592, who improved on her top mark by three points. Sophomore Erin Walsh completed the Ole Miss total with a 590.
West Virginia opened the match by winning smallbore with five of the top six shooters, 2342-2302. Buesseler finished second in the event (196-199-191) and overall to WVU's Akihito Shimizu (590-595-1185).
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
No. 3 Kentucky has won all three of its matches and Friday will be the team's GARC opener. The Wildcats are led by freshman Mary Tucker, who owns the top aggregate average in the country (1184.33). She also owns the third-best smallbore score (587.33) and second-highest air rifle average (597). Will Shaner is sixth with an 1177.33 average. Shaner (fourth, 595.33) and Richard (10th, 593) crack the NCAA Top 10 for air rifle as well.
SCOUTING THE ZIPS
No. 6 Akron (3-0, 1-0 GARC) set a home scoring record of 4669 points and a team smallbore record of 2332 in its last match on Oct. 19. The pair of Andre Gross (579-587-1666) and Wyatt Openshaw (579-586-1165) pack a powerful 1-2 punch for the Zips.

The Ole Miss rifle team returned to No. 5 in the College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Top 20 poll this week. It is the highest the Rebels have ever climbed the national rankings after reaching the Top 5 for the first two weeks of the season. The Top 5 comprises TCU, West Virginia, Kentucky, Air Force and the Rebels.
