LAST MATCH HIGHLIGHTS VS. ARMY WEST POINT
A terrific air rifle performance was enough to power the then-No. 7 Ole Miss rifle team past then-No. 8 Army West Point, 4664-4645 last Saturday in Oxford. The Rebels opened their GARC schedule by tying their sixth-highest total in the event with 2362 points.
Ole Miss placed four shooters in the top five to tally a 2362-2355 edge in air rifle. Junior Abby Buesseler and freshman Claire O'Neel posted identical 592s, while senior Alana Kelly and sophomore Erin Walsh ended the match with 589 points each. Junior Kamilla Kisch also tallied a 589 in Relay Two as a non-counter.
Kelly was key in helping the Rebels best the Black Knights, 2302-2290. The senior from Acworth, Georgia tied with Army's Clayton Hanson with 580 points. Kelly (195-199-186) set a personal best in kneeling and prone as well tying her top aggregate total (1169).
Buesseler (195-194-187) finished third with 576 points over the three-positions and second overall with an 1168. A trio of Rebels ended the match with 573s, including sophomores Jillian Zakrzeski, Erin Walsh and O'Neel.
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS
Saturday's match will be another reunion for head coach Marsha Beasley, a week after her son competed for visiting Army. Beasley, who is in her fourth season at Ole Miss, tallied a record eight national championships at the helm of West Virginia. She has also guided the Rebels to new heights, leading Ole Miss to 19 of the program's top 20 aggregate totals. The current Mountaineers squad has a pair of individual titlists. Morgan Phillips won back-to-back smallbore crowns in 2017 and 2018, while Milica Babic took home the air rifle title last season.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
No. 1 West Virginia is the most decorated program in NCAA rifle history. The Mountaineers won their 19th national championship in 2017 and have won 10 consecutive GARC Championships. West Virginia will continue to have a dynamic 1-2 punch this season in seniors Babic and Phillips. Babic has been impressive this season as she leads the nation in air rifle (598.5) and aggregate (1184.5) average. On the other side, Phillips leads the NCAA with a 589 smallbore average.
RECORD BREAKERS
The Ole Miss rifle team spent the first two weeks of the season at No. 5 in the College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Top 20 polls. It was the highest the Rebels have ever climbed in national rankings.
Despite winning its first two matches, Ole Miss currently sits at No. 8 nationally because the fall rankings are based off scores from the most recent match fired. The 2020 spring rankings will include the top-three averages of matches at three different locations which will better represent team's performance throughout the entire season.

On shooting against the best and improving:
"This match is a great opportunity for us. I have always believed that a shooter improves and gains the most experience by shooting against the best. The Ole Miss team has been working very hard in practice and we just need to continue to focus on our process and give our best effort."
UP NEXT
The Rebels hit the road for a pair of GARC matches. Ole Miss will face host Kentucky on Nov. 8 and remain in Lexington for a neutral-site match with Akron on Nov. 9.
