Ole Miss Cross Country to Face High-Profile Test at Pre-National Invitational
10/18/2019 | Cross Country
Competition Begins with Women’s Blue 6K at 10 a.m. CT Saturday
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country will conclude its regular season amidst a score of fellow nationally-ranked squads at the Pre-National Invitational, which will be hosted by Indiana State at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course on Saturday morning. The meet will act as a preview for the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which take place at the same venue on Nov. 23.
Regarded as one of the finest and most challenging cross country courses in the nation, LaVern Gibson has been the site of 12 NCAA Championship meets since 2002 and will be host to 57 men's teams, 64 women's teams and 1,261 total athletes for the Pre-National meet this Saturday. Among those 121 teams, a total of 21 currently reside within the USTFCCCA National Rankings – including Ole Miss, which sits at a program-record No. 8 on the men's side and No. 17 in women's competition.
The women's blue 6K will start the meet at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday morning, and features nine ranked schools alongside the No. 17 Rebel women: No. 3 Colorado, No. 7 Michigan, No. 8 Washington, No. 11 Boise State, No. 11 Florida State, No. 20 Illinois, No. 26 Boston College and No. 30 Oklahoma State.
The Ole Miss women faced a similar gauntlet in their last outing at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational on Oct. 4, which featured 11 nationally ranked schools. All seven Rebel women that ran set career bests. Junior Maddie King had the top performance for Ole Miss for the second consecutive meet in 43rd place, clocking in at a 34-second PR of 17:00.82. Other Rebel women running were Anna Elkin (51st, 17:06.15), Victoria Simmons (57th, 17:09.67), Ylvi Traxler (67th, 17:16.26), Skylar Boogerd (70th, 17:19.21), Courtney Hopkins (75th, 17:23.69), Lisa Vogelgesang (89th, 17:27.92) and Emma McClellan (138th, 17:58.46).
The men's blue 8K race will follow at 10:35 a.m. CT, and will be similarly competitive with 10 nationally-ranked squads beside the No. 8 Rebel men: No. 2 BYU, No. 3 Colorado, No. 4 Washington, No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 15 Indiana, No. 21 Iona, No. 25 Eastern Kentucky, No. 27 Arkansas, No. 29 Virginia Tech and No. 30 Florida State.
The Rebels will be looking to copy and paste its performance from the Joe Piane Invitational, where it beat out 10 ranked schools en route to a runner-up finish to Colorado after clocking a tight scoring spread of 28.7 seconds (the best out of the top-five teams).
Senior Farah Abdulkarim, a Second-Team All-SEC and NCAA All-South Region runner in 2018, led the charge, finishing 12th at a time of 23:35.07. All-American Waleed Suliman wasn't far behind in 17th place (23:42.04). Following him were Cade Bethmann (22nd, 23:51.22), Mario Garcia Romo (24th, 23:53.09), Parker Scott (32nd, 24:03.76), Michael Coccia (92nd, 24:40.79), Dalton Hengst (101st, 24:44.80) and Robinson Snider (103rd, 24:45.78).
