Ole Miss Cross Country Concludes Regular Season at Pre-Nationals

Rebel Men Finish Fifth, Women 10th in Seeded Blue Races
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Ole Miss cross country concluded its regular season with the No. 8 Rebel men finishing fifth and the No. 17 Rebel women placing 10th at the Pre-National Invitational at Indiana State's LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course on Saturday.
Ole Miss found itself against the best in the nation for the second straight meet, as the Rebel squads were among 21 schools ranked in the latest USTFCCCA National Rankings.
In the men's blue 8K race alone, the No. 8 Rebels were one of 11 ranked teams in a highly-competitive race. Ole Miss finished fifth in the team standings with 174 points, beating out four ranked squads (No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 27 Arkansas, No. 29 Virginia Tech and No. 30 Florida State) while finishing behind No. 2 BYU (81), No. 3 Colorado (83), No. 21 Iona (140) and No. 4 Washington (160).
At the 5K split, the Rebels were sitting in third place with three running in the top-20, but they slid two spots to fifth over the final three kilometers of the challenging LaVern Gibson course as Iona and Washington made late charges. All-American junior Waleed Suliman was the top Rebel finisher of the day, finishing 12th overall at 23:42.0.
Other Rebel men running were Cade Bethmann (24th, 23:58.1), Farah Abdulkarim (36th, 24:19.6), Mario Garcia Romo (45th, 24:23.5), Parker Scott (57th, 24:29.9), Michael Coccia (173rd, 25:33.2) and Dalton Hengst (175th, 25:36.5).
The women's blue 6K race kicked off the day, with the No. 17 Rebel women finishing 10th overall with a team score of 376. Ole Miss defeated two ranked teams in the process (No. 11 Boise State and No. 30 Oklahoma State), while No. 8 Washington scored a narrow upset victory over No. 2 BYU, 84-87.
Junior Maddie King was the top Rebel finisher for the third straight meet, finishing in 40th place at 20:51.9. Other Rebel women running in the blue race included Victoria Simmons (72nd, 21:09.8), Anna Elkin (81st, 21:17.1), Skylar Boogerd (90th, 21:23.0), Lisa Vogelgesang (98th, 21:27.3) Ylvi Traxler (137th, 21:48.0) and Courtney Hopkins (156th, 21:58.3).
Ole Miss also had several Rebels run in the open races on Saturday. Junior Emma McClellan ran the best 6K race of her career in the open competition, finishing eighth overall at a 17-second PR of 21:45.1. Nicole Rice joined her in the top-10 in 10th at 21:53.4, and she was followed by Cate Tracht (22nd, 22:18.9), Chelsea Drum (35th, 22:45.1) and Maddie McHugh (47th, 23:08.1).
Fellow junior Robinson Snider clocked a career-best himself in the men's open 8K, finishing 12th at a four-second PR of 25:16.8. Other Rebel men running in the open included Jack Filan (18th, 25:32.1), Tyler Moore (53rd, 26:22.7) and Jamie Witmer (65th, 26:34.6).
Ole Miss will take the next week off before heading to Lexington, Kentucky, for the SEC Championships on Nov. 1.
