Rebel Men Finished Fifth at the Pre-National Invitational Last Saturday

NEW ORLEANS – Ole Miss men's cross country ranks No. 11 in the Week Five USTFCCCA National Rankings released on Tuesday morning.

This marks the 31st straight appearance for Ole Miss in the men's national rankings. Additionally, the Rebel men have been ranked in 37 of the last 42 polls dating back to 2014 and at least receiving votes in 40 of the last 42 occurrences.

The Rebel men fell three spots from its program-record No. 8 slot two weeks ago after a solid but tough outing against a slew of nationally ranked school at Indiana State's Pre-National Invitational last Saturday. Ole Miss was one of 11 ranked teams in a highly-competitive men's blue 8K race, in which the Rebels finished fifth at 174 points. The Rebels beat out four ranked squads in the process (No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 27 Arkansas, No. 29 Virginia Tech and No. 30 Florida State), while finishing behind No. 2 BYU (81), No. 3 Colorado (83), No. 21 Iona (140) and No. 4 Washington (160).

At the 5K split, the Rebels were sitting in third place with three running in the top-20, but they slid two spots to fifth over the final three kilometers of the challenging LaVern Gibson course as Iona and Washington made late charges. All-American junior Waleed Suliman was the top Rebel finisher of the day, finishing 12th overall at 23:42.0. Other Rebel men running were Cade Bethmann (24th, 23:58.1), Farah Abdulkarim (36th, 24:19.6), Mario Garcia Romo (45th, 24:23.5), Parker Scott (57th, 24:29.9), Michael Coccia (173rd, 25:33.2) and Dalton Hengst (175th, 25:36.5).

The Ole Miss women are also receiving votes in the Week Five rankings, snapping what ended up as the second-longest ranked streak in women's program history at 10 straight weeks. The Rebels finished 10th overall in the women's blue 6K at Pre-Nationals, defeating ranked teams No. 11 Boise State and No. 30 Oklahoma State in the process.

Junior Maddie King was the top Rebel finisher for the third straight meet, finishing in 40th place at 20:51.9. Other Rebel women running in the blue race included Victoria Simmons (72nd, 21:09.8), Anna Elkin (81st, 21:17.1), Skylar Boogerd (90th, 21:23.0), Lisa Vogelgesang (98th, 21:27.3) Ylvi Traxler (137th, 21:48.0) and Courtney Hopkins (156th, 21:58.3).

Ole Miss will take this week off to prepare for the SEC Championships, which will be run at Kentucky on Nov. 1.
