Stroup Becomes Program All-Time Leader in Rebels 3-1 Loss Sunday
10/27/2019 | Volleyball
Senior Emily Stroup is now the Rebels’ all-time kills leader in the rally scoring era
OXFORD, Miss. -- Senior Emily Stroup became the program's all-time rally scoring kills leader, but it wasn't enough for Ole Miss Volleyball (14-6, 6-3), who fell 1-3 (23-25, 25-22, 17-25, 23-25) to No. 16 Kentucky (15-5, 8-1) Sunday at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
Stroup registered a season-high 23 kills, now totaling 1,421 in her Rebel career. She now owns the all-time record for career kills, single-season kills, and single-match kills.
Classmate Leah Mulkey added nine kills, including some crucial slams in the heat of the battle. Junior setter Lauren Bars recorded her league-leading 11th double-double of the season, dishing out 33 assists to accompany 10 digs. Senior Nicole Purcell tallied a team-high 17, while sophomore Lauren Thompson added a career-high 11.
Sophomore Aubrey Sultemeier led the Rebels at the net, posting six blocks.
Ole Miss opened the contest with confidence, picking up the first three points on a Sultemeier kill, Nayo Warnell ace, and Kentucky error. The squads traded points in what became an early edition of cat-and-mouse, enduring six ties by the 19-19 mark. The Rebels used a series of runs in that sequence, first tallying three straight on another Sultemeier slam, a Stroup kill, and another Wildcat miscue to even things at 13-13.
Down by three again, yet another Kentucky error followed by a block from Bars and Warnell and a Stroup kill evened things once more at 19.
The frame was tied yet again at 22-22 on another rejection, this time from Sultemeier and Mulkey. The Wildcats used back-to-back kills to go to set point, and eventually gained the match advantage on a 25-23 clip.
The second set continued in much similar fashion, with another back-and-forth affair, reaching six ties again, this time by the 11-11 mark after the Rebels registered three in a row on a Bars kill and back-to-back blocks from Sultemeier and Bars and Sultemeier and Stroup.
Neither squad could really gain the edge as the set progressed until a late-set surge from Stroup, who supplied three timely kills, including going back-to-back to give Ole Miss a three-point cushion at 22-19. Kentucky began to threaten, using a kill and block to come within one at 23-22.
Mulkey supplied her own surge late, delivering back-to-back slams to even the match for the Rebs after a 25-22 second frame.
Kentucky used a series of rallies early to build an advantage in the third set, connecting on a 4-0 run to go up 11-7. The Rebels continued to chip away, coming within two points at 18-16 on a pair of kills from the senior duo of Mulkey and Stroup, but Kentucky ignited for six straight points to reach set point and eventually regain the match lead at 25-17 and 2-1.
On the first point of the fourth set, Stroup made history, chiseling her name into the Ole Miss Record Books one more time. It was her 17th kill of the afternoon.
Despite the Rebels 4-1 lead early into the fourth frame, the Wildcats poured on an 8-0 run to build a 9-4 lead and remain in control up 12-7. Four consecutive points from the Rebs trimmed the deficit to just one at 12-11, and then another four-point sequence, including kills from Sultemeier, Mulkey, and Stroup from Ole Miss shifted the momentum to their favor, putting the Rebels up 17-15.
The lead was brief, as Kentucky replied with a 5-1 run to regain the lead once more, going up 20-18.
A kill from Mulkey and solo rejection from Warnell evened things once more at 20. The Wildcats used a kill and block to once again move in front. The Rebels continued to threaten, using another Warnell block- this time partnering with Bars- to come within one at 24-23, before Kentucky ultimately won the battle on a kill from three-time All-American Leah Edmond to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
