Rebels on Top After Day One in Hawaii
10/28/2019 | Men's Golf
Charlie Miller Alone in First After Career-Low 65
EWA BEACH, Hawaii – The No. 41 Ole Miss men's golf team is in first overall at the Hoakalei Country Club Invitational after firing an 18-under 270 on Monday, good for the second-lowest round in program history. Charlie Miller is the solo leader after the first 18 holes, carding a career-low 7-under 65.
The Rebels are six strokes clear of second place No. 29 East Tennessee State, which is at 12-under, being one of eight teams to shoot under-par on the first day. Ole Miss leads the field in birdies with 29, 18 coming on the back nine, and are the only team in the field of 20 to go under-par on the par 3s (-2), par 4s (-6), and par 5s (-12). The Rebels sit atop all three categories.
The starting five all stand in the top-15 individually after being the only team on day one to have every player finish in red figures. Ole Miss carded just nine bogeys on the first day of competition, the lowest in the field.
"These guys are playing some great golf right now, so it was great to see them capitalize today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "For Charlie to come out and shoot 65 was the spark that we have been waiting on. It was certainly a great start, but we have two more rounds to go to finish this fall season off like we want."
Miller's career day was highlighted by eight birdies, nine pars and just one bogey. The sophomore, starting on hole 13, went bogey-free his first 11 holes. He carded six birdies until his first and only miscue came on No. 6. Two birdies down the stretch led him to be the clubhouse leader after day one. Miller leads the field in birdies with eight, and went under-par on the par 3s (-1), par 4s (-3), and par 5s (-3).
Sarut Vongchaisit fired a 4-under 68 and is tied for fourth individually. The sophomore's sixth round in the 60s this fall featured seven birdies, second on the team and in the field, eight pars and just three bogeys.
Veeti Mahonen opened up with a 4-under 68 and is tied for fourth overall with Vongchaisit. Mahonen, starting on hole 12, went 4-under through his first nine holes, including a string of three straight birdies on holes 14, 15, and 16.
Jackson Suber carded his fourth straight round under-par with a 3-under 69. The sophomore is tied for seventh overall, and went bogey-free his first 16 holes with three birdies before finishing bogey-birdie on holes 8 and 9. Suber leads the team in pars with 13.
Jack Gnam shot a 2-under 70 to start his tournament, and is tied for 15th overall. Gnam got off to a fast start with two birdies in his first four holes, and finished even-par the rest of the way with two birdies and two bogeys for his sixth round of par-or-better this fall.
Brody Blackmon, competing as an individual, fired a season-low 3-under 69. The senior carded five birdies and added 12 pars.
The second round begins Tuesday with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with East Tennessee State, Cal State Fullerton and Nevada.
