Mahonen Leads Men’s Golf on Day Two in Hawaii
10/29/2019 | Men's Golf
Sophomore Tied for Eighth Overall After Consecutive Under-Par Rounds
EWA BEACH, Hawaii – The No. 41 Ole Miss men's golf team completed the second round of the Hoakalei Country Club Invitational Tuesday. Veeti Mahonen led the Rebels on moving day, firing a 1-under 71, and is tied for eighth overall.
The Rebels shot a second round 6-over 294, and sit just two shots back of first place No. 10 Louisville and No. 29 East Tennessee State, who are at 14-under. Ole Miss continues to lead the field in total birdies, carding 46 through the first two days of competition.
"We followed up our best round of the fall with our worst round a day later," head coach Chris Malloy said. "That is just part of being a young team and these guys trying to figure out how to win. A large part of that is being consistent, and we certainly struggled with that today. There is no doubt in my mind that these guys will bounce back tomorrow and have a great round to finish out our fall season."
Mahonen has put together back-to-back under par rounds, moving to 5-under (68-71—139). The freshman is one of just 18 golfers in the field of 114 to shoot under par each round. Mahonen is second in the field in birdies (11) and has gone 3-under on both the par 4s and par 5s.
Sarut Vongchaisit shot even-par on Tuesday and is tied for 11th individually at 4-under. The sophomore carded an eagle on the par-5 ninth to get him to 1-under at the turn, but a birdie and a pair of bogeys on the back got him back to 72 for the round.
After holding the lead through the first 18 holes, Charlie Miller went 5-over today and sits tied for 19th individually at 2-under (65-77—142). Miller leads the field in birdies with 12 and is second in the field in par-5 scoring (-5).
Jackson Suber remains in the top 25 overall at 1-under after going 69-74—143.
The final round of the tournament, as well as the final 18 holes of 2019 for the Rebels, begins Wednesday with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with Louisville, East Tennessee State and San Diego.
