Ole Miss to Race Against 12 Ranked Men’s Schools, 11 Ranked Women’s Schools
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country faces a key test against the top schools in the nation at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational this Friday.
In total, 23 nationally ranked schools will be in competition with 12 running in the men's blue race and 11 in the women's blue race. Ole Miss is included in that total, as both its men's and women's squad rank No. 14 in the latest rankings from the USTFCCCA.
Other ranked teams alongside Ole Miss in the men's blue race are three top-10 schools in No. 4 Colorado, No. 9 Notre Dame and No. 10 Wisconsin, followed by No. 13 Colorado State, No. 15 NC State, No. 16 Michigan, No. 18 Wyoming, No. 19 Indiana, No. 21 Purdue, No. 26 Eastern Kentucky and No. 29 Alabama, as well as three schools receiving votes (Florida State, Gonzaga and Southern Utah).
Ole Miss will be at full strength in the men's race, with several key members of the 2018 SEC Championship team making their 2019 debuts. Running for the first time this year are Michael Coccia, All-SEC runners Farah Abdulkarim and Mario Garcia Romo, reigning SEC Freshman of the Year Cade Bethmann and All-American Waleed Suliman. Other Rebels running include Jack Filan, Dalton Hengst, Tyler Moore, Parker Scott, Robinson Snider and Jamie Witmer.
Ole Miss finished fourth overall in the men's 8K with a shorthanded squad at the Commodore Classic on Sept. 14, with redshirt junior Parker Scott leading the way in his first race in nearly two years. Scott finished 10th overall at 24:41.9, and sophomore Dalton Hengst joined him in the top-25 in 24th place at 25:09.2.
The women's blue race is sure to be one of the toughest fields seen this regular season with five top-10 teams (No. 1 Colorado, No. 2 New Mexico, No. 6 Washington, No. 8 NC State and No. 9 Wisconsin). Other ranked schools alongside the No. 14 Rebel women include No. 12 Notre Dame, No. 16 Iowa State, No. 17 Florida State, No. 25 Boston College and No. 29 Minnesota, as well as three more schools that are receiving votes (Indiana, Purdue and Utah).
The No. 14 Rebel women will nearly be at full strength as well with the season debuts of NCAA All-South Region runners Ylvi Traxler and Lisa Vogelgesang. Freshman Skylar Boogerd will make her debut as well, and rounding out the Ole Miss lineup will be Chelsea Drum, Anna Elkin, Courtney Hopkins, Maddie King, Emma McClellan, Maddie McHugh, Nicole Rice, Morgan Claire Rose, Victoria Simmons and Cate Tracht.
Ole Miss is coming off a strong women's team win at the Commodore Classic, notching a significant 76-92 victory over No. 26 Ohio State. The Rebels clocked a scoring spread of just 29.3 seconds, which was more than a half minute faster than the Buckeyes' 1:04.2. Five Rebels finished within the top-25 and three within the top-15, with junior Maddie King leading the way in 10th place at 21:32.9.
The women's blue 5K begins at 12 p.m. CT, followed by the men's blue 5-mile at 12:45 p.m. CT.
