LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country begins its quest for postseason glory at the 2019 SEC Cross Country Championships, which will be hosted by Kentucky on Friday morning. Both the men's and women's races will air live on SEC Network for the first time in conference history, with the men's 8K up first at 8 a.m. CT.
The No. 11 Rebel men enter as the favorite from the SEC Preseason Poll, earning seven first-place votes compared to Alabama's five after winning the first SEC title in program history in 2018. The Ole Miss women were picked to finish second in the preseason poll, receiving one first-place vote behind six-time defending champions, No. 1 Arkansas.
Ole Miss is in the midst of historic team success on both its men's and women's squads over the previous several seasons under head coach Connie Price-Smith and associate head coach and cross country coach Ryan Vanhoy. Both Rebel teams have finished at least within the top-three at the conference meet in each of the past three seasons, with the Ole Miss men currently on the best streak in program history with five consecutive top-three finishes. Prior to 2014, the Rebel men had only finished third or better three times (1968, second; 1969, third; 1984, third).
Ole Miss returned all but one scorer from last season's title-winning squad, including All-American Waleed Suliman, reigning SEC Freshman of the Year Cade Bethmann and fellow All-SEC contributors Farah Abdulkarim and Mario Garcia Romo.
Ole Miss – which last year snapped Arkansas' eight-year winning streak en route to becoming the first school not named Arkansas or Alabama to win since Tennessee in 1990 – has had another great season of work leading up to the conference meet. The Rebels notched a runner-up finish at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational on Oct. 4, which propelled Ole Miss to the highest national ranking in program history at No. 8. The Rebels snared another top-five finish two weeks later among the best schools in the nation at Indiana State's Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 19.
Suliman enters as the SEC's top-ranked 8K runner this season by a seven-second margin with his season-best 23:42.00 from Pre-Nationals. In total, Ole Miss holds four of the top-20 times in the SEC this season – three of which land within the top-10 from Cade Bethmann (fifth, 23:58.00) and Farah Abdulkarim (10th, 24:19.60). Sophomore Mario Garcia Romo also ranks within the top-20 in 16th at 24:23.5.
Other Rebel men in competition this Friday include: Cole Bullock, Michael Coccia, Jack Filan, Dalton Hengst, Parker Scott and Robinson Snider.
The Rebel women, meanwhile, are also in the midst of the best stretch in their program history as well with three straight top-three SEC finishes after having never finished that high prior to 2016. Ole Miss finished a program-high second in 2016 and took third in 2017 and 2018. Last season, the Rebel women recorded the highest national finish in program history, taking 22nd place at the NCAA Championships.
Ole Miss has sat within the women's national top-20 for much of the season before running into a gauntlet of nationally-ranked schools at Pre-Nationals two weeks ago, rising as high as No. 14 in the USTFCCCA National Rankings multiple times throughout the year.
Junior Maddie King has been the top runner for the Rebel women in 2019, currently owning the 18th-best 6K time in the SEC at 20:51.9. Fellow NCAA All-Region runners Lisa Vogelgesang (21:27.3) and Ylvi Traxler (21:48.0) will also run on Friday alongside Skylar Boogerd, Chelsea Drum, Anna Elkin, Courtney Hopkins, Emma McClellan, Maddie McHugh, Nicole Rice, Victoria Simmons and Cate Tracht.
Competition begins with the men's 8K at 8:05 a.m. CT on Friday, followed by the women's 6K at 9 a.m. CT. Live coverage on SEC Network will begin at 8 a.m. CT.
