Ole Miss Men Beat 10 Ranked Schools in Runner-Up Finish

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Ole Miss men's cross country put together a fantastic race, placing second in an extremely competitive field in the five-mile race at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational on Friday.

The No. 14 Rebel men trailed only No. 4 Colorado in the team standings of the men's blue 5-mile race by a score of 71-107. Ole Miss used a tight scoring spread of 28.7 seconds (the best out of the top-five teams) to edge out 10 other ranked schools in No. 15 NC State (third, 177), No. 21 Purdue (fourth, 178), No. 9 Notre Dame (fifth, 187), No. 19 Indiana (sixth, 195), No. 16 Michigan (seventh, 213), No. 10 Wisconsin (eighth, 243), No. 26 Eastern Kentucky (ninth, 254), No. 18 Wyoming (13th, 287), No. 29 Alabama (16th, 424) and No. 13 Colorado State (18th, 463).

"Our men's team really came out today and executed their plan well," said Ole Miss associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy. "We wanted to get out hard in a big, competitive field to simulate what we will experience later in the season in the bigger championship meets. I was very happy with how we worked together and thought we competed well for our first race of the season for most of our top group."

Leading the charge for the Rebels were a slew of runners making their season debuts. Senior Farah Abdulkarim, a Second-Team All-SEC and NCAA All-South Region runner in 2018, was the top finisher for Ole Miss, placing 12th overall at a 5-mile time of 23:35.07. All-American junior Waleed Suliman wasn't far behind in 17th place at 23:42.04 in his debut as well.

Cade Bethmann, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Year, nabbed the third best time for Ole Miss in 22nd at 23:51.22. Mario Garcia Romo also made his season debut for Ole Miss and placed 24th (23:53.09). Other Rebel men running were Parker Scott (32nd, 24:03.76), Michael Coccia (92nd, 24:40.79), Dalton Hengst (101st, 24:44.80) and Robinson Snider (103rd, 24:45.78).

The No. 14 Rebel women faced a gauntlet in the women's blue 5K race, which featured 11 total nationally ranked schools. Ole Miss finished 10th overall ahead of ranked schools in No. 25 Boston College (12th, 308) and No. 16 Iowa State (15th, 421), while unranked Utah came away with a massive upset over the field and No. 1 Colorado, 110-116.

"On the women's side, we walked away a little disappointed at how we performed overall," Vanhoy said. "We have some specific things that we need to work on over the next few weeks, but I am confident that we will get it figured out as the season goes on."

All seven Rebel women that competed in the blue race set career bests. Junior Maddie King had the top performance for the second consecutive meet, clocking in at 17:00.82, a 34 second PR that put her in 43rd place. Other Rebel women running in the blue race were Anna Elkin (51st, 17:06.15), Victoria Simmons (57th, 17:09.67), Ylvi Traxler (67th, 17:16.26), Skylar Boogerd (70th, 17:19.21), Courtney Hopkins (75th, 17:23.69), Lisa Vogelgesang (89th, 17:27.92) and Emma McClellan (138th, 17:58.46).

Senior Maddie McHugh had an excellent day in the women's open 5K race, winning at a 39-second PR of 17:15.88. Chelsea Drum (ninth, 17:35.46), Nicole Rice (10th, 17:37.76) and Cate Tracht (13th, 17:42.44) joined her in the top-15, while Morgan Claire Rose notched a top-50 finish in 41st at 18:25.27.

Three Rebel men also ran in the men's open 5-mile race, with Tyler Moore leading the way in 15th place at 24:59.53. Jack Filan (20th, 25:10.25) and Jamie Witmer (57th, 26:13.98) joined him in the open race.

Ole Miss has a week off before concluding its regular season at Indiana State for the Pre-National Invitational on Sat., Oct. 19. The meet will be run at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, the site of the 2019 NCAA Championships.
