Rebel Men Coming Off Significant Runner-Up Finish at Notre Dame
NEW ORLEANS – Ole Miss men's cross country has been rewarded for an excellent outing at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational last weekend, soaring up to a program-record No. 8 spot in the Week Four USTFCCCA National Rankings released on Tuesday morning.
The jump in the rankings marks just the second Rebel appearance in the national top-10, the first since the previous record ranking of No. 10 in Week Three of the 2016 season – which, coincidentally, came following a win at the same Joe Piane Invitational at Notre Dame. This latest entry in the national polls marks the 30th straight appearance for Ole Miss in the men's national rankings. Additionally, the Ole Miss men have been ranked in 36 of the last 41 polls dating back to 2014 and at least receiving votes in 39 of the last 41 occurrences.
Ole Miss beat out 10 ranked schools at Notre Dame last Friday, finishing runner-up to No. 4 Colorado in the blue 5-mile race by a score of 71-107 after a superb season debut for several Rebels. Ole Miss used a tight scoring spread of 28.7 seconds (the best out of the top-five teams) to edge out No. 15 NC State (third, 177), No. 21 Purdue (fourth, 178), No. 9 Notre Dame (fifth, 187), No. 19 Indiana (sixth, 195), No. 16 Michigan (seventh, 213), No. 10 Wisconsin (eighth, 243), No. 26 Eastern Kentucky (ninth, 254), No. 18 Wyoming (13th, 287), No. 29 Alabama (16th, 424) and No. 13 Colorado State (18th, 463).
Senior Farah Abdulkarim, a Second-Team All-SEC and NCAA All-South Region runner in 2018, led the charge, finishing 12th at a time of 23:35.07. All-American Waleed Suliman wasn't far behind in 17th place (23:42.04). Following him were Cade Bethmann (22nd, 23:51.22), Mario Garcia Romo (24th, 23:53.09), Parker Scott (32nd, 24:03.76), Michael Coccia (92nd, 24:40.79), Dalton Hengst (101st, 24:44.80) and Robinson Snider (103rd, 24:45.78).
The Rebel women, meanwhile, fell three spots to No. 17 following a solid outing amidst a formidable field at Notre Dame. This is the 10th consecutive poll that the Rebel women have been ranked dating back to Week Three of the 2018 season, the second-longest streak for the Ole Miss women since appearing in 12 straight polls during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Ole Miss faced a gauntlet in the women's blue 5K race, which featured 11 nationally ranked schools. The Rebels finished 10th overall ahead of ranked schools in No. 25 Boston College (12th, 308) and No. 16 Iowa State (15th, 421), while unranked Utah came away with a massive upset over the field and No. 1 Colorado, 110-116.
All seven Rebel women that competed in the blue race set career bests. Junior Maddie King had the top performance for Ole Miss for the second consecutive meet in 43rd place, clocking in at a 34-second PR of 17:00.82. Other Rebel women running in the blue race were Anna Elkin (51st, 17:06.15), Victoria Simmons (57th, 17:09.67), Ylvi Traxler (67th, 17:16.26), Skylar Boogerd (70th, 17:19.21), Courtney Hopkins (75th, 17:23.69), Lisa Vogelgesang (89th, 17:27.92) and Emma McClellan (138th, 17:58.46).
With both Ole Miss teams ranked yet again, this constitutes the 22nd time in Ole Miss history that both programs have been ranked at the same time.
Ole Miss has this week off before traveling to Terre Haute, Indiana to preview the national championship course at the Pre-National Invitational, which will be run at Indiana State's LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course on Sat., Oct. 19.
