Rebels Fall to UAB, Shutout Memphis
OXFORD, Miss. – Playing for just the second and third time during the fall, Ole Miss split its doubleheader this past Sunday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, falling to UAB before rebounding to defeat Memphis in a defensive affair.
The Rebels struggled to get the offense going against the Blazers, eventually falling 6-1. Neither team was really clicking in the contest, but UAB was able to capitalize on its chances, turning its seven hits into six runs.
After UAB grabbed the lead by a single run in the top of the third, Ole Miss responded to tie the game in the bottom half. Paige Smith led off the frame with a single up the middle, moving to second on Taylor Watford's sacrifice bunt and scoring on Ally Mena's single to left.
However, from there it was all Blazers. UAB regained the lead with a run in the fourth and added a pair in each of the fifth and seventh innings.
Ava Tillmann pitched four of the seven innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits with a couple of strikeouts. Anna Borgen allowed one run on three hits in her two innings, while Lindsey Johnson finished things off with a couple of runs surrendered despite not allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts in her lone frame.
In the second half of the twin billing, the Rebs were once again locked in a tight defensive showdown. This time, however, Ole Miss came out the victor, shutting out Memphis, 2-0.
Deadlocked in a scoreless tie into the sixth inning, Watford led off with a walk before being replaced by pinch runner Kaylee Horton. Horton then stole second, moved to third on Regan Cheyne's sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.
Despite a scoreless top of the seventh, Ole Miss nonetheless played the bottom half of the final inning. Kacey Hvitved led off with a triple and scored during the next at bat on Autumn Gillespie's sacrifice fly to center, bringing the score to its final point at 2-0.
Savannah Diederich got the start in the circle and threw four hitless frames, striking out seven along the way. Taylor Bachmeyer came in for one frame and kept the Tigers scoreless despite a pair of hits, while Borgen finished things off with the final two innings, allowing one hit with a pair of strikeouts.
The Rebels will play their only fall game of the exhibition season away from home on Sunday, taking on Troy in Irondale, Alabama at 1 p.m. CT.
