Rebels Conclude Fall Season with Tight Battle at Swayze Field

OXFORD, Miss. – After trailing all night, Team Broadway plated three runs in the seventh inning to tie Pizza Bowl XX at four runs apiece—but Team Holston came through with two runs in extra innings to secure a 6-4 win as Ole Miss baseball concluded its fall season.

Starting pitchers Doug Nikhazy and Gunnar Hoglund turned in strong starts as neither team scored in the first two frames. Nikhazy went two scoreless without allowing a hit. The Freshman All-American struck out three and walked a pair. Hoglund walked just one and allowed two hits from Zack Smith and Connor Walsh, but he worked out of it thanks to four strikeouts over two innings of work.

Greer Holston's club made the first mark on the scoreboard in what could've been a big third inning. An error, followed by a walk and a hit-by-pitch, loaded the bases with no outs for Tyler Keenan, but Derek Diamond induced a 4-6-3 double play to limit the damage, though Team Holston pushed one across on the groundout.

Holston's squad didn't stop there. Tim Elko and Hayden Leatherwood came through with back-to-back doubles in the fourth to plate one run. Cam Fisher drove home another on a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-0 lead through four and a half.

Team Broadway struck back with one in the fourth thanks to strong hitting from a pair of junior college transfers. Ben Van Cleve opened things up with a double, and he later came around on an RBI single by Cael Baker.

The Team Holston offense added one to the lead in the sixth. Leatherwood reached on a one-out walk and ultimately came around to score thanks to base knocks by Knox Loposer and Fisher.

The bats awoke from Team Broadway in the seventh. Servideo provided the spark with a two-out double down the right field line. Cade Sammons followed with an RBI single to left. The rally continued with a Hayden Dunhurst triple into the right-field corner. The Team Broadway catcher then scored with ease on a game-tying single by Van Cleve before Team Holston turned to Ben Gilbert on the hill, who escaped the inning by striking out Baker.

The two squads went scoreless through the final two frames of regulation behind strong efforts on the mound from Braden Forsyth and Austin Miller. After 10 innings, the score remained tied at four.

For extra innings, each team started with the bases loaded and one out. That allowed Loposer to come through with the at-bat of the day, sending a two-run single to right field to give Team Holston a 6-4 lead. Holston himself then closed out the victory with a strikeout and a flyout to secure the win.
