Rebels fall 3-0 in second-to-last home match
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss Volleyball (14-11, 6-8 SEC) dropped its penultimate home contest Friday, falling 3-0 to Georgia (18-7, 10-4 SEC) by scores 18-25, 19-25, 21-25 in Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
Senior libero Nicole Purcell tallied 20 digs in the contest, tying for the fifth-most in a three-set match in program history. This marks the third time this season Purcell has recorded a top five single-match dig performance.
The veteran has registered 13 games with 20 digs or more this season, and moves into fourth-place for single-season digs after Friday's contest with 479.
Classmates Emily Stroup and Nayo Warnell each tallied six kills, while junior setter Lauren Bars dished out 20 assists.
The match began with the squads trading points, Georgia holding the early advantage. A kill from sophomore Aubrey Sultemeier, followed by a solo rejection from veteran Leah Mulkey and a Purcell service ace, helped the Rebels narrow the gap to 9-11. Another three-point sequence, this time courtesy of kills from Warnell and freshman Anna Bair bookended a Georgia miscue, and evened the contest at 12-12.
UGA regained the lead and added cushion on a 6-2 run, putting the Bulldogs up 18-14, and taking the upper hand in the match after four-straight points sealed the first set 25-18.
The second frame consisted of an early back-and-forth affair, with Ole Miss building early cushion on a 4-0 run to go up 5-2. Georgia then responded with four consecutive points of their own, taking the slight edge at 6-5 before it was quickly cut off once more from a set-tying kill from Bair.
The Rebels used a pair of Bars service aces, combined with a Stroup slam and Bulldog error, to regain the lead at 11-9. Georgia quickly tied the contest and took control once more as the cat-and-mouse ensued. A kill and back-to-back service aces from Georgia junior Kianna Young put the Bulldogs up 16-14 and began a 7-1 run as they finished Set 2 25-19 and took a 2-0 match lead.
After a kill from Stroup tied the third frame at 9-9, Georgia collected five straight points to maintain the lead and add cushion at 14-9. The Rebels chipped away, trimming the deficit to 16-13 and then 17-14 on kills from Bars and Stroup.
A UGA service ace kept Ole Miss within three at 19-16 before the Bulldogs replied with five of the next six points to set up match point.
The Rebels battled, winning four consecutive points on a Georgia error, blocks from Stroup, Warnell, and Bars, and a kill from Mulkey to again narrow the gap to three at 24-21.
A kill from Young ended the run, handing Georgia a 25-21 decision and the victory. She finished with nine kills.
