Ole Miss Won the SEC Men’s Championship for the Second Consecutive Season
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss cross country received a trio of season honors from the SEC on Tuesday, as associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy was named SEC Men's Coach of the Year while freshmen Skylar Boogerd and Cole Bullock were named the Women's and Men's SEC Freshmen of the Year, respectively.
Vanhoy, who is in his seventh year at Ole Miss and earlier today was also named the USTFCCCA South Region Men's Coach of the Year, led the Rebel men to their second consecutive SEC men's championship title in dominant fashion, recording the largest margin of victory in the conference since 2015 with a 55-point victory over Alabama. The Rebels, who are currently ranked No. 9 in the nation, also took their fourth NCAA South Region title in the last six years after a superb day of team racing last Friday in Tallahassee.
This is the second SEC Coach of the Year honor for Vanhoy, as well as the second ever in Ole Miss cross country history.
Freshman Skylar Boogerd made history of her own, becoming the first Rebel to ever win the SEC Women's Freshman of the Year award after finishing as the conference's top freshman. Boogerd finished 19th for the Ole Miss women in their runner-up team finish, which matched a program record.
On the men's side, SEC Men's Freshman of the Year Cole Bullock was a key piece of the Rebel men's title repeat, finishing ninth overall as the conference's top freshman finisher. He is the fourth Rebel to ever win the award and the second in a row, following Barnabas Kirui (2006), Sean Tobin (2014) and Cade Bethmann (2018).
In addition to the three awards given out, Ole Miss also landed nine Rebels to either the All-SEC or All-Freshman teams. Making First-Team All-SEC were junior Waleed Suliman, senior Farah Abdulkarim and sophomore Cade Bethmann, making Second-Team were freshman Cole Bullock, junior Michael Coccia and junior Victoria Simmons and making the All-Freshman team were Boogerd, Bullock and Jack Filan.
Ole Miss will conclude the 2019 season when both its men's and women's programs will run at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, held this year at Indiana State's LaVern Gibson Championships Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.
