Ole Miss Among Four Nationally to Place Men and Women in Top-25 Four Straight Years
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Ole Miss women's cross country continued to make history after a 21st place finish at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, the best national finish in women's program history.
The Rebel men took 22nd place overall, making Ole Miss now one of just four in the NCAA to have placed both men and women within the national top-25 the past four years alongside BYU, Colorado and Stanford.
The conditions were far from ideal at a muddy LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country course, with temperatures near freezing and a steady rain and sleet mix falling on the course. That didn't stop the Rebel women from putting together a great team race, though, despite being without top returning national finisher Clio Ozanne-Jaques and top SEC finisher this fall, Victoria Simmons.
Junior Anna Elkin led the way for the second straight week, finishing 92nd overall at 21:13.0. She was at the front of a Rebel scoring pack that clocked a spread of 32.7 seconds.
"We wanted to make sure that we didn't go too hard," Elkin said. "We wanted to be able to move up throughout the race. I think we started out a little farther back than we wanted to be, but we saw our coach at 1K and knew we just had to start picking people off. Our biggest thing today was just to run together as a team. Everyone was running with someone from the team and that makes a difference. I was telling the girls that this team is really special. We've had a lot of stuff happen to us this year, but someone has always been there to step up. No one has been doing it for themselves, everyone has been doing it for each other. That's how history is made. It has been a really special thing to be a part of."
Other Rebels running on Saturday were SEC Freshman of the Year Skylar Boogerd (140th, 21:33.0), sophomore Ylvi Traxler (147th, 21:36.4), junior Maddie King (153rd, 21:38.7), senior Maddie McHugh (169th, 21:45.7) and junior Emma McClellan (171st, 21:47.6).
On the men's side, junior Waleed Suliman earned All-American status for the second straight year – becoming the first Rebel to ever repeat as a cross country All-American. Suliman finished 20th overall in the men's 10K at 31:09.6, the fourth-best individual finish by a Rebel at the national meet.
Other Rebels running on Saturday included sophomore Mario Garcia Romo (111th, 32:04.2), junior Parker Scott (146th, 32:19.0), sophomore Cade Bethmann (177th, 32:41.6), junior Michael Coccia (192nd, 32:53.7) and SEC Freshman of the Year Cole Bullock (235th, 34:15.1). Ole Miss was without All-Region and All-SEC runner Farah Abdulkarim, who did not finish the race.
