Rebels Start Strong at Don DeNoon Classic

Shey Taiwo Finished as Top Collegian in the Weight Throw for Third Straight Week
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Ole Miss track & field opened its first split squad weekend of the indoor season with a strong first day at Southern Illinois' Don DeNoon Classic on Friday. A handful of Rebel pole vaulters, meanwhile, competed out at the Texas Tech Open.
Freshman Joseph Benedetto had the best performance of his young collegiate career, winning the weight throw with a PR of 18.58m (60-11.50), which ranks as the ninth best in Ole Miss history. Sophomore Chris Long finished close behind in fourth at 17.79m (58-04.50).
Sophomore Shey Taiwo finished as the top-collegian in the weight throw (20.54m 67-04.75) for the third consecutive week. The sophomore currently ranks No. 10 in the NCAA and third in school history after throwing 21.47m (70-05.25) two weeks ago at the Vanderbilt Invite. Rebel volunteer coach Jeneva Stevens finished second at 23.07m (75-08.25) behind Olympian DeAnna Price (23.17m/76-00.25).
The three remaining Rebel women in the weight throw all finished in the top-10. Freshman Tedreauna Britt set a PR with a throw of 17.14m (56-03.00), which ranks as the eighth-best in school history. Senior Annika Larsson finished seventh at 17.43m (57-02.25), while freshman Leah Klein came in 10th at 16.15m (53-00.00).
Freshman Demond Fleming won his first title of his collegiate career as well, taking first in the triple jump at a half-foot PR of 14.04m (46-00.75). Fraquan Gaines finished close behind in third after recording a jump of 13.82m (45-04.25).
For the second straight week, junior Kieshonna Brooks put together another strong performance in the pentathlon, finishing in second after accumulating 3,482 points – winning both the 60 meter-hurdles and the long jump along the way. Ghania Warren finished fifth at 3,127, while Haley Hood set a career-best in seventh at 3,083 points – 13th all-time at Ole Miss.
The Rebel women also received a runner-up finish from junior Kaira Simmons in the triple jump, who today topped out at 11.18m (36-08.25).
In the pole vault, Austin Garrett led the Rebel men at SIU in fourth place (4.10m/13-05.25), while Nicole Kallenberger was the front-runner for the Rebel women out at Texas Tech in sixth place at 3.77m (12-04.50). Unattached senior Lindsey Murray won the women's pole vault at SIU at a height of 3.85m (12-07.50).
The Rebels will be back in action for both meets tomorrow morning. Field events for the Don DeNoon Classic will begin at 10 a.m. CT. with the running events starting at 11:15 a.m. The Texas Tech Open will begin at 11 a.m. CT, with two Rebel men competing in the pole vault.
