Rebels Run NCAA’s Top DMR Time at JDL DMR Invitational

2/15/2019 | Track and Field

Ole Miss Distance Medley Relay Won at 9:34.43, Sixth-Best in School History

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Ole Miss track & field's men's distance medley relay crew continued the recent tradition of fast times out at the JDL DMR Invitational, nearly breaking its own facility record while running the NCAA's current top time on Friday night.

The Rebel quartet of sophomore Waleed Suliman (1200, 2:53.92), junior James Burnett (400, 47.59), sophomore John Rivera Jr. (800, 1:49.41) and senior Derek Gutierrez (1600, 4:03.51) won at a time of 9:34.43, which converts down to an NCAA-leading 9:26.73 after adjusting for track size. The original time of 9:34.43 ranks sixth all-time at Ole Miss and comes within two tenths of the JDL facility record of 9:34.24 set by Ole Miss in 2017 by Ryan Manahan, Nick DeRay, Craig Engels and Sean Tobin.

Ole Miss has won the SEC title in the men's DMR in four of the last five seasons and claimed the NCAA title in 2017.

Next up for both the Rebel men's and women's track & field teams is the SEC Indoor Championships, held this year at the University of Arkansas next week on Feb. 22-23. The meet will air live throughout both days of competition on SEC Network and online on SECN+.
