Ole Miss Clobbers Four Home Runs on the Day, Two Off the Bat of Jessica Puk
AUSTIN, Texas – Ole Miss opened the Texas Invitational on Friday with a doubleheader split, falling to Tulsa 4-1 in the early game before bouncing back with a 5-1 victory over Sam Houston State and Red & Charline McCombs Field.
Game One | Tulsa 4, Ole Miss 1
The Rebels (7-4) got off to a strong start, taking the lead in the second inning, but Tulsa (8-3) was able to put up a late rally to take the day's opening game. Brittany Finney took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings pitched. Ava Tillmann came on to toss 1.2 frames in relief, allowing a pair of hits.
Finney gave herself a lead in the second inning, crushing a no-doubt home run down the left field line. Jessica Puk came up just short of back-to-back jacks, smoking a double high off the left field wall. However, Ole Miss was unable to take advantage and extend its lead as Puk was stranded at second.
Having faced the minimum through three innings, Finney ran into some trouble in the fourth. With a runner on second, the Golden Hurricane strung together back-to-back two-out hits with a double and a single to score a pair and take the lead.
After Ole Miss put runners at the corners but was unable to score in the fifth, Tulsa notched back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom half to extend its lead to 4-1. Ole Miss was unable to answer in the seventh, dropping the opening game of the Texas Invitational.
Game Two | Ole Miss 5, Sam Houston State 1
After suffering their third-straight loss in the early game, Ole Miss bounced back with a solid victory over Sam Houston State. Molly Jacobsen started in the circle for the Rebels and shut the Bearkats down in her 5.0 innings. The lefty allowed just one hit, striking one out and surrendering no runs. Anna Borgen closed things out with 2.0 frames in relief, allowing one run on one hit.
After the first two batters of the game were retired, Ole Miss put together a two-out rally to get the offense rolling. After Abbey Latham drew a walk, Finney followed with a base knock, setting the stage for a Puk three-run bomb to left field.
The Rebels added a run in the third on a big fly to left by Latham, while Puk went deep for the second time in the fourth for a solo shot, pushing the Ole Miss lead to 5-0.
Jacobsen surrendered her first hit to leadoff the fifth on a bleeder to left field but was able to buckle down and collect three-straight outs, stranding the runner at 3rd and finishing off her scoreless outing.
Leading off the sixth with a double, Sam Houston State was able to break up the shutout on a grounder to first base but Borgen was able to limit the damage to a single run.
Ole Miss loaded the bases in the seventh thanks to a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch but were unable to push any runs across. However, the Rebels were able to collect their three outs on defense to close out the game and salvage the doubleheader split.
The Rebels are back in action at the Texas Invitational on Saturday, facing off SHSU in a rematch at 10 a.m. CT before battling No. 11 Texas at 1 p.m.
