Engels is the First Rebel to Win in the Mile
NEW YORK – Former Rebel All-American Craig Engels took the lead with two laps to go and held on for the win, claiming the USA Indoor Championships title in the men's mile on Sunday afternoon.
Engels, a six-time All-American and an NCAA Champion as a member of the 2017 Ole Miss men's distance medley relay team, took gold at a winning time of 3:59.69, the only time today to break the four-minute barrier. Engels ran the fastest final 400-meters at 54.09, holding off runner-up Henry Wynne (4:00.20).
Engels is the first Rebel to win a USA medal in the mile and the 11th Rebel to ever win USA gold at the indoor championships. Last year at the indoor championships, Engels took third in the men's 1500-meter, earning him a spot at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, in which he made the 1500 final and took seventh place.
Just two days ago, former Rebel NCAA Champion Janeah Stewart won the women's weight throw title. Today, Stewart took eighth in the shot put at 17.54m (57-06.50). Rebel volunteer coach Jessica Ramsey medaled in third at 18.37m (60-03.25), while fellow volunteer coach Jeneva Stevens finished ninth at 17.16m (56-03.75).
