Ole Miss opens up at Shoal Creek Feb. 10
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss women's golf team is through with its winter break, and now with the goal of making it back to NCAA Regionals firmly in their minds, attention is set on the all-important championship season.
After a competitive fall, Ole Miss should have plenty of motivation going into the spring season. Eight Rebels appeared on the travel roster through the first five tournaments.
Ole Miss used that depth to finish top-10 in each of the fall events, closing with a fifth-place finish at the Jim West Challenge in San Marcos, Texas.
Sophomore Julia Johnson was the star of the fall. Consistency was the name of the game for the SEC Freshman of the Year a year ago. Johnson led the team in stroke average (72.64) and tied for the lead in top-10 finishes (2).
"Julia has played very consistent for us," head coach Kory Henkes said. "She had a solid fall season and is looking forward to competing this spring. Her ball striking is one of her biggest strengths and it is looking as good as ever lately."
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, a freshman from Taby, Sweden, has been a consistent piece of the Ole Miss squad, making the lineup in all five events. Hutchinson-Kay is second on the team in stroke average (74.07) and rounds at par or under (5).
"Ellen has been an immediate impact player for us," Henkes said. "She has a calming demeanor on the course, but she will fight to post a great score every time she tees it up. She worked really hard this offseason with her swing coach and it has showed during her recent play."
Kory Henkes announced the transfer of Kennedy Swann into the program at the start of the spring semester. The junior from Clemson brings added depth and experience to the Rebel lineup, having played for two Tiger NCAA Championship teams.
"We are excited for Kennedy to join the program," Henkes said. "She has proven that she can play at a high level with some great accolades from her time at Clemson. Kennedy loves to compete and we have no doubt that she will enhance the competitive spirit of our team."
The Rebels come into the spring ranked No. 44 suggesting a potential for a regional berth. After some good times in the fall, the spring season awaits.
"We want to take each tournament one at a time and do our best to not get ahead of ourselves," Henkes said. "We plan on working hard day-in and day-out, constantly trying to improve. Ultimately, we want to get back to the National Championship in May and have a chance to compete for the NCAA title."
Ole Miss opens up at the Shootout at Shoal Creek on Feb. 10 from historic Shoal Creek Golf Club in Birmingham, Alabama.
