Rookie clinches first conference match victory of the season for the Rebels
OXFORD, Miss. -- With a loyal gathering of Rebel faithful on sight, freshman Jan Soren Hain definitely delivered excitement, clinching the first conference match of his career Thursday as Ole Miss Men's Tennis outlasted Auburn 4-3 for their first league win of the season at Palmer/Salloum Tennis Complex.
The win was the second straight victory for Hain, rallying after dropping his opening set and being down 3-4 in the second. The rookie controlled the contest, picking up back-to-back-to-back games, taking the set 6-4 and forcing a third. It was a game into the set when it became the deciding point for both squads, and Hain continued to play with intensity.
Down again in the third 1-2, he rallied for three consecutive contests to take a 4-2 lead. Things went back-and-forth for the next few games, as Hain and his opponent, junior Michael Durham endured three successive games at deuce before Hain prevailed by way of a wide Auburn shot for the clinch.
The return of sophomore Finn Reynolds in doubles brought spark to the Ole Miss lineup, as he and partner Karlo Kranic cruised in doubles, winning 6-1 after securing five consecutive games. The duo of veterans Filip Kraljevic and Tim Sandkaulen gave the Rebels the early advantage, after outlasting Auburn at No. 1 doubles 6-4.
The Tigers took the match lead rather quickly, after evening the score with a win on Court 2 and almost immediately following up with a victory on Court 3.
The contest was evened on strong play from Sandkaulen, who climbed from a 1-4 deficit to fire an unblemished game and even things at 4-4. He did it again to equalize once more at 5-5, and then triumphed from a four-point deficit in the tiebreaker to prevail 8-6 and take the set.
The momentum carried over into his second set, where he took the opening game and didn't let up, evening the match at 2-2.
Kranic set his classmate and the Rebels up for victory, outdueled the Tigers' Brandon Laubser in a second-set break, after being down 5-1, for his third sequential SEC win.
All eyes turned to the rookie duo on the west end of the court, with fellow freshman Simon Junk battling on Court 5. Junk powered through the second set with a four-game lead to set up a deciding third set, and took the first two games of that to threaten before ultimately dropping the set and setting up Court 6 for the clinching.

Opening Statement…
"I think we did a good job in doubles getting that point- obviously ended up being very big for us. I think we competed really well today. It was obviously a very tough match but we saw very positive signs from some freshmen. Karlo (Kranic) came through being down 5-1 in the second set and coming back and being able to win that match. Also, our No. 1 player Tim (Sandkaulen), who was really fighting in the first set 3-6, won the tiebreaker and was able to turn that one around. We were able to come back from deficits, which is always encouraging. To see Jan (Hain) out there competing and handling himself really well was also a great sign for us. We're really looking forward to our next match."
On carrying momentum into Saturday vs. No. 18 Alabama…
"I think it's huge obviously. You get guys that haven't been in that situation before, that haven't had the experience of being able to win a big match and finish it. We were able to do that at several different positions, especially for the guys that hadn't been there before like Jan (Hain). This is also a new situation for Karlo (Kranic). Whenever you have a new player come in and be able to finish it off like that that's got to give us a lot of confidence for sure."
