Ole Miss Runs Winning Streak to Seven Games with Strong Offensive Showing
The Rebels (21-7) tallied 16 runs on 16 hits over the two games, including 10 extra-base knocks to garner victories over the Bulldogs (9-21) and Cowgirls (20-7) by 6-3 and 10-1 margins, respectively. Ole Miss runs its winning streak to seven games, coming out on top in 13 of its last 14 contests.
The white-hot bats of Autumn Gillespie and Kylan Becker were a huge force behind the offensive success of the day for Ole Miss. Gillespie went 4-for-5 across the two games with a pair of homers and two doubles, driving in two runs and scoring three times, while Becker hit safely in half of her eight at-bats, smacking a pair of triples en route to two RBIs and two runs scored.
Game One | Ole Miss 6, Samford 3
Ole Miss fell behind the Bulldogs early but for the second straight game the Rebels showed their resolve, coming back from a two-run deficit to upend Samford.
Ava Tillmann garnered her fifth win of the season, throwing four complete innings with three runs allowed (two earned) five hits. Molly Jacobsen picked up the save finishing off the final three frames with a pair of hits allowed and five strikeouts.
Gillespie gave the Rebels an early lead in the second, sending a cannoning shot to left-center for a solo dinger. Samford, however, quickly erased the advantage and grabbed one of their own with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly in the third.
After a Kelsey Royalty RBI single extended the Bulldog lead to two in the fourth, the Rebels began their comeback in the home half.
Jessica Puk was hit by a pitch to start the inning, followed by a Gillespie walk to put a pair on. Kaylee Horton brought Puk in with a double to center field, advancing Gillespie to third. Brittany Finney was hit by a pitch to load the bases and pinch hitter Gabby Alvarez uncorked a double to left-center to score a pair, putting Ole Miss back in front.
Taylor Watford was robbed of a base hit on a fantastic play by the Bulldog third baseman but the putout was still enough to score pinch runner Kelsha Loftin. Becker finished things off with a triple to the right-center gap, bringing Tate Whitley trotting home from third. By the time the inning was over, Ole Miss had scored five runs to go up 6-3.
With the lead in hand, the Rebels turned to Jacobsen to seal the deal and the junior came through, collecting the nine outs necessary to open the day with a win for Ole Miss.
Game Two | Ole Miss 10, No. 18 Oklahoma State 1 (5 inn.)
The Rebels rolled the momentum right into the game's second game, jumping all over the 18th-ranked Cowgirls for their second win over the Cowgirls in as many days.
Finney earned the win in a complete-game effort, surrendering just one unearned run on four hits, striking out eight Cowgirls in her sixth win of her senior campaign.
The Rebels wasted absolutely no time in getting their offense rolling, with the first five batters reaching safely. Kylan Becker got things started with a single and was brought home from second by Abbey Latham's double.
From there, the rout was on. Ole Miss got back-to-back home runs from Puk and Gillespie to go up 4-0. Finney laced a double down the right field line to bring Horton in from third and Whitley scored Finney with a single up the middle to round out scoring for the inning, giving Ole Miss a 6-0 lead after the opening frame.
The Cowgirls scored an unearned run in the second to bring the deficit to five but Ole Miss got it right back in the home half as Roth brought in Latham with a ground out to second.
In the third, Kylan Becker smacked her second triple of the game to scratch across Mikayla Allee and in doing so broke the Ole Miss career record for triples with the 12th of her career. Just a few moments later, Becker came home herself on a wild pitch to extend the Rebel lead to 9-1.
Taylor Watford put the cherry on top of a nearly perfect Sunday afternoon in the fourth, bringing pinch runner Katelin Cooper home on a fielder's choice to cap scoring at 10-1. Finney came on in the fifth to close out the run rule win, inducing three outs to finish off the Cowgirls.
The Rebels will take their red-hot play back into SEC action this coming weekend, hitting the road for Columbia, South Carolina for a three-game series with the No. 16 Gamecocks Saturday through Monday. The final two games of the series will be broadcasted on the SEC Network.
