Two Solo Homers the Difference in 2-0 Defeat
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (21-8, 2-2 SEC) saw its seven-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, falling 2-0 to No. 16 South Carolina (23-7, 2-5 SEC) in a low scoring Game One of the series at the Carolina Softball Stadium.
Brittany Finney delivered a strong outing despite receiving the loss. The senior surrendered a pair of runs on just three hits, striking out six in 6.0 innings.
The Rebels threatened to score early, putting a pair of runners in scoring position with two down in the first through an HBP for Abbey Latham, a bloop single for Autumn Gillespie and a wild pitch. However, the Gamecocks were able to retire the side on a strikeout to end the threat.
After retiring the first five batters of the game, Finney surrendered back-to-back solo home runs to Lauren Stewart and Alyssa Kumiyama, giving South Carolina a two-run lead with two in the books.
Ole Miss had two chances to score with Kylan Becker at second with one out in the third and sixth innings but failed to bring the speedy senior home in either frame.
Kaylee Horton slapped a single up the middle with one out in the seventh to give the Rebels some life but Ole Miss was unable to keep the rally going, dropping the opening game to the Gamecocks.
Quick Hits
• Kylan Becker extended her hitting and reached base streaks to seven games, going 1-for-2 at the plate.
• Autumn Gillespie also posted a base knock, extending her hitting and reached base streaks to six games.
