Fallert Clinches Second-Straight Top 25 Win as Rebels Down #22 Georgia 4-3
3/22/2019 | Men's Tennis
The senior has now clinched three Top 25 wins this spring…
OXFORD, Miss. -- Veteran Fabian Fallert played a role he's been quite familiar with this season, clinching a 6-2, 7-5 win at fourth singles to deliver Ole Miss their second-straight victory over a Top 25 opponent and third consecutive SEC win Friday evening at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
With the 4-3 victory, Ole Miss improves to 11-8 on the season and 3-4 in league play. It was also Fallert's third clinch over a Top 25 opponent this season, after providing the key victories against then-No. 20 Oklahoma State in January and then-No. 16 Alabama during the semifinals of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in February.
After coasting to an early 3-0 lead in the opening set, Fallert continued to hold command, taking a 5-1 lead and eventually the set 6-2.
The Rebels picked up the advantage with wins on Courts 2 and 3 to clinch the doubles point. Both duos of junior Tim Sandkaulen/sophomore Finn Reynolds and Fallert and sophomore Cotter Wilson rallied from being down early in the doubles portion. The point was clinched from Sandkaulen and Reynolds, who outdueled the Bulldogs to a 7-5 decision.
Georgia evened the score briefly with a win on Court 2, but rookie Karlo Kranic, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, was quick to put the Rebels back on top with identical 6-4, 6-4 decisions and his fifth consecutive victory.
Shortly after Kranic's finish, Reynolds triumphed with his own 6-4, 6-4 marks, setting up Fallert. Friday marked the first dual match of the season for Reynolds, where he registered his first ranked win of the year, taking down the Bulldogs' freshman Philip Henning.
Georgia continued to close in, tallying a win at first singles to cut the Rebels' lead to 3-2.
Enter Fallert, whose second set took a much different design than the first. Grinding through back-and-forth control, Fallert found momentum to emerge on top of a 5-5 tie and secured the final two games.
The match was played out, as freshman Simon Junk dropped a heartbreaking 10-point tiebreaker in the third set, forcing extra points to determine Court 6's champion.

On the clinch from senior Fabian Fallert…
"Fabi has been there many times before. He's a veteran and really enjoys that moment. You could really see it today, how much he enjoys that situation. He did a fantastic job closing out the match, but this was a total team effort today."
On the return of sophomore Finn Reynolds to the singles lineup…
"It was great to see Finn back. This was his first match back in a long time, and he was really outstanding, it was actually a bit surprising how good he was coming right back. It was a really good win for the team, and this gives us a lot of confidence moving forward to Sunday's match."
On taking this momentum in Sunday against No. 19 Tennessee…
"We have to learn and look and what we're doing really well now, and we have to be able to do that again on Sunday. They are another really tough team, and we have to be ready to do the things we did today, and then we will see how it goes.
