Softball Suffers Gut-Wrenching Defeat to No. 6 Florida in Marathon Affair

3/29/2019 | Softball

Three Run Home-Run in the 15th Inning the Difference in Heartbreaking Loss

OXFORD, Miss. – Molly Jacobsen and Kelly Barnhill went back-and-forth deep into the night on Friday, putting on a show for the 1,371 fans in attendance at the Ole Miss Softball Complex in one of the finest pitching duels you will ever see. No. 6 Florida came out on top, 5-2, thanks to a three-run home run by Kendyl Lindaman in the 15th inning.

It is just the second defeat in the last nine games for No. 22 Ole Miss (22-9, 3-3 SEC) and only the second home loss of the season for the Rebels.

Jacobsen finished the game as the tough-luck loser, suffering just her second defeat in a Rebel uniforms after allowing three runs on five hits in 10.0 innings, striking out 11. The Iowa native came on in relief of starter Brittany Finney, who also pitched admirably with two runs surrendered on five hits in five full frames.

On a night where the bulk of the Rebel lineup struggled to produce anything off of Barnhill, Kylan Becker kept her hot bat going with a 3-for-6 showing at the plate, registering the Rebels' only two RBIs of the game.

The Gators (29-6, 3-4 SEC) opened scoring in the second inning as Jordan Roberts took the third pitch of the frame deep to left field for a solo home run. Florida tacked on another run in the fourth on Sophia Reynoso's sacrifice fly. However, the damage could have been much worse, with Finney working around a bases-loaded jam with no outs to keep the Gators to a single score.

The Rebels, ever resilient, fought back to knot the game back up in the fifth. Kaylee Horton and Amanda Roth got the innings started with back-to-back singles before pinch hitter Ally Mena reached on an error to load the bases. Becker stepped in and delivered the clutch knock, sending a single up the middle to plate a pair.

Ole Miss put two runners on in the 10th as Mikayla Allee was hit by a pitch and Becker followed with a sharp single through the left side. However, the Rebels were unable to take advantage, stranding the runners on base.

A walk and a muffed catch at first base put two runners on with one out for the Gators in the 11th. However, Jacobsen buckled down and induced a fly ball to left before striking out Alex Voss to get out of the jam unscathed.

Jacobsen again stranded a runner at third in the 14th but when the 15th rolled around the lefty could not keep the Gators at bay any longer. A single and an intentional walk put two on for Kendyl Lindaman, who got a pitch to hit and didn't miss, delivering the game-winner.

The Rebels will have an opportunity to bounce back quickly, facing off with Florida in Game Two of their series with Florida on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
