Softball Pounces Early in 7-2 Victory Over Austin Peay

3/6/2019 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Scoring five runs in the game's first two innings, Ole Miss (14-6) jumped all over Austin Peay (11-10) early in Wednesday night's midweek clash, setting aside the Governors by a 7-2 margin to extend its win-streak to six games.

Molly Jacobsen earned her sixth win of the season after starting in the circle, allowing one run on eight hits, striking out six in 5.0 innings. Sophomore Ava Tillmann tossed the final two frames in relief, surrendering one run on one hit and a pair of walks.

After Jacobsen struck out the side in the first, Ole Miss kept the momentum going to grab an early lead in the bottom half. Kylan Becker kept her hot streak going with a leadoff single, putting a runner on for Jessica Puk, who followed with a blast to left-center for her fifth home run of the season. Kaylee Horton tacked on another run for Ole Miss, dropping a single to center to bring in Autumn Gillespie.

The Rebs added to their lead in the second frame, with Puk once again igniting things with an RBI single to right to score Tate Whitley before Becker came home on a passed ball for the second Ole Miss run of the inning.

Austin Peay used a late-inning rally to knock a run off the Rebels lead in the third, stringing together three-straight two-out singles to score a run. However, Jacobsen was able to limit the damage, leaving the bases full of Governors to end the frame.

After Brittany Finney delivered an RBI double off the left field wall to plate Horton in the fifth, the Governors quickly cut the deficit back to four with a bases loaded HBP in the top of the sixth.

However, Ole Miss was having no thoughts of a comeback for APSU. Becker led off the home half with her fourth triple of the season, spanking a pitch off the fence in right-center. Abbey Latham brought the Miami native home during the next at-bat, lifting a sacrifice fly to right.

Tillmann induced three quick groundouts in the seventh and Ole Miss locked up a win in its final game before the start of SEC play. The Rebels will welcome Arkansas to Oxford for a three-game series beginning Saturday, with the final two games scheduled to be aired on national TV on the SEC Network.
