Rebels See Three-Run Lead Dissipate Against No. 14 Arkansas

OXFORD, Miss. – After Mother Nature delayed the start of Ole Miss and Arkansas's SEC opener on Saturday, the Rebels and Razorbacks battled back-and-forth deep into the night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, with the 14th-ranked Hogs taking the game by a 10-4 score.

Brittany Finney received the loss in the circle, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in 5.2 innings, striking out five. Molly Jacobsen came on in relief but failed to record an out, issuing two walks and being saddled with one earned run. Ava Tillmann finished out the game for the Rebs, allowing a pair of runs in her 1.1 innings.

The Rebels (14-7, 0-1 SEC) put pressure on the Razorbacks (19-3, 1-0 SEC) right from the get go, loading the bases on an Abbey Latham single and back-to-back HBPs for Jessica Puk and Autumn Gillespie, causing Arkansas to make a pitching change. However, the change did the trick as Autumn Storms struck out both batters she faced in the inning to halt the quick start.

The Razorbacks grabbed the lead in the second with a solo homer to the left-center but the lead wouldn't last too long.

Ole Miss loaded the bases in the third with an identical sequence of a Latham single and HBPs for Puk and Gillespie. However, this time the Rebels took advantage. Amanda Roth rolled a slow grounder to short and the throw home went awry, allowing Latham and Puk to score. Kaylee Horton followed with a hot-shot to the gap in left-center, legging out a two-RBI triple to put the Rebs in front 4-1 heading to the fourth.

From there, though, it was all Razorbacks. Danielle Gibson cut the Rebel lead to one run with a towering two-run homer to center field before Arkansas scored five runs on three hits, three walks and an error to gain a commanding lead at 8-4.

The Rebels loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on a Brittany Finney single and walks from Becker and Latham but couldn't take advantage, leaving the bags full.

The Razorbacks tacked on a pair in the seventh on Gibson's two-run single and the Rebels weren't able to muster a rally, going down in order in the bottom half to close the game out.

Ole Miss and Arkansas will face off in Game Two of the series on Sunday, battling it out at 5 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcasted to the nation live on your television set, airing on the SEC Network.
