Walk-Off Walk in Extras Gives Softball 3-2 Win Over UAB

4/10/2019 | Softball

Rebels Battle Back from Early Deficit to Take Down the Blazers

OXFORD, Miss. – The Rebel offense wasn't in full-swing at the Ole Miss Softball Complex but the Rebs did just enough on Wednesday, rallying to defeat UAB 3-2 in extras.

Despite falling behind early due in part to a first-inning error, the pitching duo of Ava Tillmann and Brittany Finney did work in the circle to keep Ole Miss (28-10) in the ball game. Tillmann took a no-decision in the start, allowing two runs on four hits in six complete. Finney earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings, surrendering just a pair of base knocks.

After a two-out error extended the opening frame, the Blazers (15-23) took advantage to score a pair of unearned runs, with Destini England knocking a single up the middle to bring home two.

An Amanda Roth HBP and a Kaylee Horton walk put two runners on for Brittany Finney and the senior came up clutch, taking a pitch the other way for an RBI single to halve the UAB lead. With just one out on the board and a pair of runners in scoring position, the Rebs had a chance to do more damage but were unable to produce the timely hit.

The Blazers threatened to strike right back, loading the bases with one out on a walk sandwiched by a couple of HBPs. However, the Rebels turned two to get out of the jam, with Mikayla Allee snagging a hard liner and tossing to third for the force.

With the innings winding down, Ole Miss struck to tie the game in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. After Brittany Finney and Autumn Gillespie drew back-to-back walks, Tate Whitley lifted a fly ball deep enough for both runners to advance and the Blazers threw the ball away, giving Finney plenty of time to stroll home and deadlock the score at two apiece.

While the Rebels left the winning run stranded at third in the seventh, they would not miss their chance to walk off in the first frame of extras. After Finney drew a one-out walk, Gillespie and Whitley followed with back-to-back base knocks to load the bases. With nowhere to put her, Allee demonstrated a good eye at the plate, working a 10-pitch at-bat and watching ball four to bring home the winning run.

The Rebels will have a quick turnaround to jump back into SEC play, hosting Missouri in a three-game series in Oxford Friday through Sunday. All three games will be streamed via SEC Network +.
