No. 17 Softball Snags Both Ends of Twin Billing Over Missouri

4/12/2019 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Brittany Finney's senior heroics were on display on Friday, helping lead the No. 17 Rebels (30-10, 9-4 SEC) to a doubleheader sweep over Missouri (23-18, 6-8 SEC) at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

With the wins, Ole Miss moves into a tie atop the SEC standings with Auburn. The four SEC series wins is also the most in a single season in the history of the Rebel program.

Game One | Ole Miss 7, Missouri 5 (8 innings)
A sixth-inning rally by the Tigers extinguished a 5-run Ole Miss lead but the Rebels would have the last laugh thanks to Brittany Finney's walk-off bomb in the eighth.

Before her extra-innings heroics, Finney made the start in the circle, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks, striking out five in a no-decision. Molly Jacobsen earned the win in relief, allowing two runs and fanning a pair in 2.2 frames.

After both teams went down quietly in the first two frames, the Rebels opened scoring in the third. Amanda Roth led off the frame with a stand-up double, moving to third on Mikayla Allee's sacrifice bunt. Kylan Becker followed with a walk and a steal before Abbey Latham delivered an RBI single to bring home Roth. Latham was thrown out attempting to get to second but Becker used some heads-up baserunning to come across for the second run of the inning.

With the bases loaded in the fourth, Gabby Alvarez drew a walk with nowhere to put her, allowing Katelin Cooper to trot home. With the bases remaining juiced, Kylan Becker punched a single to right to bring home two more runs, pushing the Ole Miss lead to 5-0.

However, the Tigers had a comeback in mind. After drawing a run closer in the fifth, Missouri struck for four runs in the sixth to tie the game. After the game-tying hit, Jacobsen came in with a pair of runners on and one out and got the Rebels out of dodge, inducing a popup and a strikeout to keep the score deadlocked.

Neither team was able to break the tie in regulation, sending Ole Miss to extra frames for the sixth time in its last 10 games.

The Tigers threatened to take the lead in the eighth, loading the bases with 1 out on an HBP, a single and an error. Jacobsen was having none of it, though, rolling a pair of grounders to keep the runs off the board.

Despite missing out on the chance to garner the win in the circle, Finney earned the win in a different way in the bottom of the eighth. With Kaylee Horton standing on third, the senior absolutely tattooed an Eli Daniel offering for the game-winning home run.

Game Two | Ole Miss 1, Missouri 0
While the early game featured a number of offensive highlights for both teams, the night cap was all about pitching and defense. The Rebels survived a pitcher's duel to sweep the day and setup the possibility for the first sweep of the season.

Molly Jacobsen was once again given the ball in the circle, earning her second win of the day and 13th of the season with a whale of an outing, shutting out the Tigers in seven complete with just three base knocks allowed.

Jacobsen had plenty of help from her defenders, with the Rebels rattling off a handful of highlight-reel plays, including a pair of acrobatic grabs in the outfield from Becker and Horton and two over the shoulder grabs from infielder's Allee and Jessica Puk.

With just six hits combined in the game, offense was at a premium. Of what little was available, Ole Miss turned into a run in the second. Autumn Gillespie was hit by a pitch to lead things off, later coming around when Finney snuck a double inside the left line for what turned out to be her second game-winning hit of the day.

The Rebels put runners at the corners with no outs in the fourth but failed to extend their lead. However, the single run was enough for Jacobsen, giving the Missouri hitters fits all day long.

Ole Miss will go for the series win on Sunday, taking on the Tigers in the finale at 1 p.m. CT. The game will be available for streaming via SEC Network +, with Seth Austin and Missy Dickerson on the call.
