Fourth Inning Costly as Softball Falls in Series Finale

4/14/2019 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – A five-run fourth inning proved to be Ole Miss' undoing on Sunday as the Rebels (30-11, 9-5 SEC) dropped the series finale with Missouri (24-18, 7-8 SEC) by a 5-2 margin at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Despite missing the chance to complete the first series sweep of the season, Ole Miss nonetheless picks up its fourth SEC series win of 2019 after taking both ends of Friday's twin bill.

After earning a pair of wins on Friday, Molly Jacobsen was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks, striking out four in 4.0 innings of work. Brittany Finney was effective out of the bullpen, surrendering a pair of hits and walks apiece in three scoreless frames.

The Rebels got out to an early lead, loading the bases on singles by Gabby Alvarez and Amanda Roth and a walk from Kylan Becker. Pinch runner Kacey Hvitved was able to scurry home on a wild pitch to open scoring, but the Rebels missed a chance to open things up more with three runners stranded.

A couple of innings later, the Tigers turned the tide with some timely hitting and a costly Rebel miscue. After a single and a double garnered the lead for the Tigers, Jacobsen rolled a possible double play ball with the bases loaded. However, the throw was a bit low and Autumn Gillespie was unable to squeeze it, allowing a pair of runs to come home. Mizzou followed with a sacrifice fly, ending the inning up 5-1.

The Rebels drew one run closer in the sixth with a bases loaded walk but again failed to take advantage of an opportunity for greater damage with the bases full and one out as Jessica Puk was rung up with a tough call on an inside pitch and Gillespie flied out to right.

After a fast top of the seventh, the Tigers came right back with a quick frame of their own in the bottom half, salvaging a win in the final game of the series.

Ole Miss returns to action on Tuesday, hosting UT Martin a n a midweek battle at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The game will be streamed live via SEC Network +.

Quick Hits
• Ole Miss stranded 12 runners on-base Sunday, tied for the most in a game this season. The Rebels have stranded double digit runners on-base in three of their past five games.
• The Rebels drew 11 walks in the game, the most for Ole Miss since racking up 12 free passes against Colgate in 2017.
Gabby Alvarez was the only Rebel with multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-3 at the dish with a pair of singles.
Abbey Latham reached in all four plate appearances, going 1-for-1 with three walks. Kylan Becker also demonstrated a good eye, collecting three bases on balls herself.
